That belief began long before hospitality became his career. Growing up in Hamburg, Germany, Germer travelled throughout Europe with his family, experiencing many different hotels and resorts. One memory that has never left him was a small, family-run hotel on the shores of Lago Maggiore in northern Italy. While most children might remember the lake or the view, Germer remembers watching the team. He was fascinated by the way they moved together, quietly anticipating one another’s needs and creating an experience that felt effortless. Even as a child, he noticed the choreography behind the scenes. It was there that he first understood that exceptional hospitality is created by people working together with purpose.
Throughout a career spanning Four Seasons Resort Maldives, Raffles Hotel Singapore, The Ritz-Carlton Osaka, The Ritz-Carlton Toronto, The New York EDITION and, most recently, The Ritz-Carlton New York NoMad, one lesson has remained constant. Early in his career, Four Seasons leader Uday Rao taught him that the greatest gift a leader can offer is the ability to make a positive difference in someone’s life. More than three decades later, Germer says that lesson continues to shape every decision he makes as a leader. Curiosity, he believes, is what keeps a leader listening, observing and never assuming they have mastered the craft. It is how thoughtful hospitality continues to evolve.
