Swan Hellenic has set a new company mark. The cruise line says its July revenue rose 170 per cent from the same month last year. It was the best month in the firm’s history.
Year-to-date growth reached 268 per cent. Early data for August also points up. The tide, it seems, has no wish to turn just yet.
The line did not give its actual revenue total. The growth rates are company-supplied data, not a full set of audited accounts.
Polar trips put the heat into sales
Trips to the polar regions did most of the work. Swan Hellenic said its core polar range drove two-thirds of total growth. Arctic revenue grew threefold, while Arctic guest numbers rose 125 per cent.
There is no need to skate around the point: ice is hot. That may trouble the laws of science, but the sales team will cope.
Past guests are also coming back in force. Their share has more than doubled in two years. Many have now sailed on three or more Swan Hellenic trips.
That trend is a sound sign for the travel trade. It shows that a polar trip need not be a one-off sale. It can be the start of a long bond between the guest, the line and the adviser.
Public feedback adds weight to the case. Cruise Critic currently gives Swan Hellenic a 4.7 out of five member rating, based on 278 reviews at the time of publication.
Asia-Pacific demand makes a mighty splash
Growth beyond the ice was just as hard to miss. Sales for the line’s new Asia-Pacific trips rose 373 per cent year-on-year. Its new Africa range grew 98 per cent.
The gains were also spread across markets. Swan Hellenic reported triple-digit growth in Australia, Asia, Europe, the United Kingdom and North America. It did not report results for each market.
For travel advisers, this broadens the sales pitch. The brand can offer warm seas and rich cultures as well as snow, ice and parkas. Past guests get a new map to roam, while new clients gain more ways to step aboard.
The next Antarctic season is now tracking 32 per cent ahead of last year, the line said. That is a firm lead, not a done deal. Even so, it gives Swan Hellenic a strong base for the peak polar sales months.
“Our team is very proud of these exceptional results,” said Swan Hellenic Chief Commercial Officer Mario Bounas. “They’re a ringing endorsement of the outstanding discovery experiences Swan Hellenic provides. From our high-end ships to the gourmet cuisine, service and off-the-beaten path itineraries and expeditions our dedicated staff, expedition teams and onboard experts deliver. At the same time, we wouldn’t be where we are today without the support of our wonderfully enthusiastic and insightful trade partners. We’d like to thank them all.”
The thanks are well placed. Swan Hellenic’s ships may sail to the far edge of the map. Yet each trip still starts much closer to home, quite often at an adviser’s desk.
