Esplanade Hotel Fremantle by Rydges has commenced a design-led refurbishment program, marking the next chapter for one of Western Australia’s most iconic heritage hotels.
The staged works will focus on key conference and event spaces, Atrium Garden Restaurant, selected public areas and the hotel’s lobby arrival experience, enhancing the guest experience while respecting the character and history that have made the Esplanade a landmark in the heart of Fremantle.
Delivered in stages from July, with completion targeted for mid-2027. The hotel’s guest accommodation, along with Ball & Chain and Marine Lounge Bar will continue to operate as normal.
Originally opened in 1896, the refurbishment coincides with the 130th anniversary of the Esplanade Hotel building, providing a timely opportunity to celebrate the hotel’s enduring place in Western Australia’s story while investing in the spaces that will carry it into the future.
Design being led by Hames Sharley, ensures thoughtful consideration of the hotel’s heritage, while balancing contemporary comfort and functionality.
Once complete, guests will enjoy fresh updates across Level One, ground floor surrounds, selected heritage areas, Atrium Garden Restaurant and key conference and event spaces. A major audio-visual upgrade, including LED walls and enhanced lighting capabilities, will further strengthen the hotel’s position as Fremantle’s leading conference, events and celebration venue.
Esplanade Hotel Fremantle General Manager, Jacqueline Comb, said the refurbishment represented a meaningful investment in both the hotel and the future of Fremantle’s visitor economy.
“Esplanade Hotel Fremantle has long been part of the fabric of this city, welcoming leisure guests, families, conference delegates, weddings and major events for generations,” Mrs Comb said.
“As the building approaches its 130-year anniversary, it feels like the right moment to honour its history while preparing it for the next generation of guests. This refurbishment is about enhancing the experience while preserving the character that makes the hotel so special. We are investing in spaces that will feel refreshed, functional and future-ready, from dining and public areas through to some of our most important event venues.”
Located in the centre of Fremantle, the Esplanade Hotel Fremantle by Rydges features 300 rooms and suites, multiple dining outlets including Marine Lounge Bar, Atrium Garden Restaurant and Ball & Chain, resort-style pools and one of the largest conference and events offerings in the region.
Further updates including guest information, will be released as the refurbishment progresses.
