Carnival cuts the first steel for a 230,000-tonne megaship designed to put sweeping ocean views and the sea itself back at centre stage.

Carnival Cruise Line has put steel to the test of ambition. Work has now begun on Carnival Destiny, the first ship in its next-generation Ace Class.

The steel-cutting ceremony took place at Fincantieri’s Monfalcone shipyard on 10 July 2026. Sparks, senior executives and a 3D hologram gave the cruise industry its first real look at Carnival’s biggest new-build chapter in years. Carnival Destiny will enter service in the northern summer of 2029. Two sister ships will follow in 2031 and 2033.

A famous Carnival name returns

There is more than a dash of showmanship in the name. The original Carnival Destiny, delivered in 1996, was the first cruise ship to exceed 100,000 gross tons. It was then the world’s largest cruise ship and helped redraw the industry’s scale chart.

Three decades later, Carnival and Fincantieri are bringing back that famous name with far more steel, glass and swagger.

Fincantieri says the new Carnival Destiny will have a gross tonnage of about 230,000. That would make it the largest ship the Italian builder has produced. It would also be the largest cruise ship built in Italy. The LNG-powered vessel will have more than 3,000 cabins. It will carry over 8,000 passengers when full.

Size, however, is only half the story and cruise ships have never been shy about telling the other half.

More sea to see aboard Carnival Destiny

Carnival calls Destiny the most outward-facing megaship at sea. Its design will include more than 4.5 acres of glass, broad multi-storey glass walls and a rebuilt lanai deck. Carnival also promises the highest number of ocean-view balcony cabins at sea.

The aim is refreshingly simple: let passengers see the ocean they crossed a gangway to enjoy.

That may sound obvious, but modern megaships can sometimes resemble floating resorts in motion. Carnival’s answer is to bring the horizon back into the room. It should also return to the restaurant, the lounge and, no doubt, quite a few holiday photographs.

More than 70 per cent of Carnival Destiny’s venues and attractions will be new concepts for the cruise line. Carnival has flagged fresh dining ideas, next-generation bars and lounges, immersive entertainment and lively outdoor spaces. More details are due later in 2026.

“Carnival Destiny builds on a legacy that changed cruising once before, reimagining what guests can experience at sea,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “With this ship, we’re elevating the guest experience again creating a ship that feels more expansive, while helping guests feel more connected and ultimately have more fun.”

Why Carnival Destiny matters to travel advisors

For travel advisors, the sales message is already taking shape. Carnival Destiny will sail to destinations in the Paradise Collection by Carnival. The range covers exclusive destinations in the Caribbean, The Bahamas and Mexico.

That gives agents a long runway to build interest in a new ship class and Carnival’s growing destination network. It also gives the line a major product story well before the first passenger orders a cocktail or misplaces a cabin key.

The Ace Class also shows the scale of Carnival Corporation’s continuing work with Fincantieri. The shipbuilder says it has delivered 76 vessels to Carnival Corporation brands over the past 30 years. That total includes 15 ships for Carnival Cruise Line. Carnival Destiny is not a speculative first date. It is the latest chapter in one of cruising’s longest industrial marriages.

The finer details remain under wraps, but the broad direction is clear. Carnival is building a ship of formidable scale. At the same time, it is making a clear promise to reconnect guests with the sea.

In an industry fond of bigger, brighter and busier, the view beyond the rail may prove to be Destiny’s smartest flourish.

Carnival Destiny is due for delivery in summer 2029. More onboard features and experiences will be announced later this year. Official ship information is available from Carnival Cruise Line.
