New booking data from Australia’s largest tiny house accommodation company, Tiny Away, reveals winter has overtaken summer as its busiest season, as Australians increasingly swap crowded beaches for starry skies, fire pits and slower-paced getaways.
It’s official: Aussies are over battling summer crowds and squeezing onto packed coastlines. According to Tiny Away, bookings made for winter stays have increased by 41 per cent year-on-year, making it the strongest winter season since the company launched in 2018. Furthermore, stays between June and August now account for 25.7 per cent of annual revenue, surpassing summer for the first time. The data also shows travellers are embracing longer, slower escapes, with mid-week winter bookings increasing by 51 per cent year-on-year as flexible workers extend their time away. Families are also top of the trend, with family bookings surging by 97 per cent during the winter period, reflecting a growing desire for nature-based holidays that offer space, simplicity, and a break from crowded tourist hotspots.
“Winter has become the season Australians are looking forward to most,” says Jeff Yeo, Co-Founder of Tiny Away. “Guests are telling us they want local stays and experiences that encourage them to slow down, reconnect with nature and enjoy life’s quieter moments.”
The trend reflects a broader shift in how Australians are choosing to travel domestically, with more people seeking peaceful nature-based escapes and simple pleasures. From misty morning coffees and long walks through national parks to evenings spent around an outdoor firepit under the stars, people are increasingly embracing the colder months rather than escaping them. Tiny Away’s secluded cabins, set amongst vineyards, forests and rolling countryside, have become popular destinations for couples, families and wellness-minded travellers looking to recharge.
“Winter travel offers space, stillness and the chance to truly switch off,” adds Yeo. “More Australians are discovering that some of their most memorable travel experiences happen when the temperatures drop.”
