In an industry built on movement, change and constant reinvention, few people have provided the steady hand, reassuring voice and trusted guidance that Gina Dounis has delivered to Australia’s travel sector for three remarkable decades.
Today, the Australian Travel Industry Association (ATIA) celebrates a milestone that speaks not only to longevity but also to loyalty, dedication and an unwavering commitment to the businesses that form the backbone of Australian travel.
For many travel professionals, Gina Dounis is more than a name on an email or a voice at the other end of a telephone. She has become one of the industry’s most respected and trusted advisers, helping thousands of travel businesses navigate compliance requirements, accreditation processes and the countless challenges that arrive with running a travel enterprise.
Anyone who has spent time in the Australian travel industry over the past 30 years has likely crossed paths with Gina. Chances are she has helped solve a problem, answered a pressing question, or calmly guided a business through what seemed like an impossible situation.
It is the sort of contribution that rarely makes headlines, yet quietly shapes the success of an entire industry.
Having first joined the Association during its AFTA days before returning on 3 June 1996, Gina has witnessed an extraordinary transformation. She has seen the industry evolve from fax machines and paper files to digital platforms, online accreditation systems and real-time communications. Through every major industry shift, she has remained a constant source of support.
She was there during the development and implementation of accreditation programs that helped strengthen consumer confidence. She supported members through airline collapses, economic downturns and perhaps the greatest challenge of all, the COVID-19 pandemic, when travel businesses across Australia faced an unprecedented fight for survival. Throughout those turbulent years, Gina continued helping members navigate uncertainty with professionalism and compassion.
ATIA Chief Executive Officer Dean Long said Gina’s contribution to the sector is impossible to overstate.
“Gina is one of the most respected and recognisable people in Australian travel. There would be very few members who haven’t picked up the phone and spoken to her at some point during their careers.”
“Gina has supported generations of travel professionals and has become part of the fabric of our industry. Her contribution to Australian travel cannot be overstated.”
“On behalf of ATIA, our Board and members across the country, congratulations to Gina on this remarkable milestone and thank you for 30 years of dedication to our industry.”
Those words will resonate strongly across the sector.

Travel often celebrates aircraft, destinations, cruise ships and new products. Yet industries are ultimately built by people. The individuals who quietly answer calls, solve problems and keep businesses moving forward often leave the deepest legacy.
That is exactly why Gina’s achievement matters.
As ATIA continues to advocate for travel businesses across Australia, Gina remains an enduring symbol of service, professionalism and commitment. Her career reflects the very best qualities of the travel community: resilience, reliability and a genuine willingness to help others succeed.
Three decades is a long time in any profession. In travel, where change arrives faster than a delayed boarding announcement, it is extraordinary.
The Australian travel industry has changed dramatically since 1996. One thing, however, has remained reassuringly consistent. If members needed help, advice or guidance, there was a very good chance Gina Dounis would be there to provide it.
And for thousands of travel professionals across Australia, that has made all the difference. For ATIA and the wider industry, her 30-year milestone is not simply a work anniversary. It is a celebration of service that has helped shape Australian travel for an entire generation.

About the Author.
Sandra has spent a working lifetime quietly rescuing journeys, one itinerary, one anxious caller, one impossible connection at a time. Years in Australia’s finest travel agencies taught her the art of calm, how to find a flight in a fog of cancellations, how to soothe a traveller when luggage wanders, how to turn nine frantic days in Europe into something resembling sense. Qualified, seasoned, endlessly patient, she learned that good travel advice is part logistics, part listening.
But the storyteller in her was always waiting for her turn. Writing offered a new map, a way to turn experience into reflection, detail into delight. At Global Travel Media, Sandra now writes the truths only insiders know: the mishaps, the laughter, the grace found between gates and goodbyes. She reminds us that travel, for all its fuss, is still one of life’s better ideas.
