The Australian Masters Games will return to New South Wales for the first time in more than 25 years when Newcastle and the Central Coast host the 21st Australian Masters Games from 13–20 November 2027.
The 2027 event will mark a significant milestone in Australian sporting history, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the Australian Masters Games, which first began in Tasmania in 1987 and has since grown into Australia’s largest regular multi-sport festival.
Hosted in partnership by the City of Newcastle and Central Coast Council, the Games are expected to feature more than 40 sports across venues throughout both regions, bringing together thousands of participants from across Australia and overseas for a week-long celebration of sport, fitness, friendship and community.
Confederation of Australian Sport Chief Executive Officer Rob Bradley said the announcement represented an exciting milestone for one of Australia’s most enduring sporting events.
“For 40 years, the Australian Masters Games has brought people together through sport, creating opportunities for participants to stay active, challenge themselves, reconnect with friends and enjoy the many social and health benefits that sport provides,” Mr Bradley said.
“The Games are about much more than competition. They are about participation, friendship, personal achievement and creating experiences that extend well beyond the sporting arena.
“Having Newcastle and the Central Coast come together to host the Games provides an incredible opportunity to showcase two outstanding destinations while delivering an unforgettable experience for participants, supporters and volunteers.”
“The Australian Masters Games continues to demonstrate that sport has the power to enrich lives at every age and stage, and we look forward to working with our host cities, sporting partners and the wider Masters community on the journey to 2027.”

City of Newcastle Lord Mayor Gavin Morris welcomed the announcement.
“We’re proud to partner with Central Coast Council to deliver this incredible celebration of sport,” Cr Morris said.
“Hosting a national event of this scale brings thousands of athletes to Newcastle to enjoy our quality sports facilities.
“People of all abilities participate in the Masters Games both playing and in supporting roles. I’m proud that Newcastle is a welcoming and inclusive destination for all.
“We’re committed to attracting and hosting major events as a key economic and tourism driver for our region. I would like to see Newcastle firmly establish itself as a premier national events destination.”
Central Coast Council Acting Mayor John Mouland said Council was proud to support the event and the opportunities it would create for the region.
“Council is proud to partner with the City of Newcastle to co-host the 2027 Australian Masters Games,” Acting Mayor Mouland said.
“This event, running from 13–20 November 2027, will bring our region to life with more than 40 sports on offer, along with a strong increase in visitors. We expect the Games to deliver a real boost to our local economy, support local businesses, and create a fantastic opportunity for our community to get involved and be part of the action.
“Importantly, the Games celebrate inclusive and accessible sport, encouraging people of all abilities to stay active, connect with others, and enjoy the many benefits of a healthy, active lifestyle.”
