SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium has officially named its recently hatched King Penguin chick, with inspiration coming straight from the basketball court. The King Penguin chick is now three months old and has been named “Dunkin” in honour of the Sydney Kings basketball team.
The name is a nod to the popular sport and local team after the aquarium’s animal care team noticed that the chick’s high-pitched, squeaky call sounds like the iconic sound of rubber sneakers gripping a basketball court.

At three months old, Dunkin is doing exceptionally well,” said Renee Howell, Curatorial Supervisor, Sub-Antarctic Penguins. “Each day the chick is becoming more adventurous and exploring the ice. Little Dunk is a favorite for our team and visitors.”
Born to doting parents Quentin (Mum) and Forrest (Dad), Dunkin is said to be thriving. The pair have been observed sharing parental duties, with Forrest frequently taking over chick-minding to give Quentin some well-earned rest.
Guests visiting have the chance to see Dunkin, Quentin, and Forrest at the Sub-Antarctic penguin habitat and witness for themselves the bird that sounds like a buzzer-beater in action!
