Hoi An has always been a charmer. Lanterns, low-slung rooftops, a river that knows how to behave at sunset, it’s long traded on atmosphere rather than ambition. For years, that was enough. You came, you wandered, you left a little lighter of step and heavier of camera roll.
But something has shifted, and not with the usual fanfare that accompanies luxury arrivals in Asia’s more excitable markets. This time, it’s subtle. Measured. Almost old-fashioned in its restraint.
The signal comes courtesy of Grand Signature Resort Hoi An by M Village, which has quietly secured a global nod from the Luxury Lifestyle Awards, taking out the Best Luxury Heritage Resort title. A tidy achievement, yes, but more importantly, a first for Hoi An in this particular category. And in this business, firsts tend to matter.
Not Reinventing the Wheel, Just Polishing It
There’s a temptation in destinations like Hoi An to “upgrade” heritage to sand it back, gloss it over, and present it in a way that feels vaguely international and broadly forgettable. Mercifully, Grand Signature has resisted that urge.
Instead, it leans into what Hoi An has always done well: understatement.
The resort positions itself as a “Peaceful Heritage Village”, which might sound like something dreamt up in a marketing workshop, but on the ground, it lands with more credibility than most. Timber frames, tiled roofs, open spaces that breathe nothing jars, nothing shouts. It’s architecture that understands where it is.
Guests don’t arrive so much as settle in.

The Luxury of Slowing Down
There’s no aggressive programming here. No clipboard of compulsory experiences. No polite pressure to “maximise your stay”.
And thank goodness for that.
Instead, time unfolds in a way that feels, dare one say it, normal. Mornings arrive gently. Afternoons drift. Evenings do what evenings are meant to do: wind down without fuss.
You walk. Or you cycle. You notice things. A detail in the timberwork. The way light lands in a courtyard. The rhythm of a place that hasn’t been over-engineered for the Instagram crowd.
Nearby, the cultural backbone of the region remains intact and accessible. The craftsmanship of Kim Bong, the pottery traditions of Thanh Ha, the green, edible abundance of Tra Que, these aren’t “add-ons”. They’re part of the fabric. As they always have been.
Service Without the Script
Now, here’s where many resorts come unstuck.
Grand Signature’s answer is something it calls “Villager Care”. On paper, it risks sounding like another well-meaning slogan. In practice, it’s refreshingly free of theatre.
Staff engage without hovering. They anticipate without overreaching. There’s a naturalness to the interaction that suggests training has taken a back seat to instinct, and that’s no bad thing.
Guests aren’t treated as passing transactions. There’s a sense, however subtle, of inclusion. You’re not just staying here; you’re part of the rhythm, if only briefly.
It’s hospitality as it was understood before it was systematised into oblivion.
A Competitive Field, A Different Angle
Let’s be clear: Hoi An isn’t short of accommodation. The pipeline has been busy, and the competition is real. But much of it trades on either proximity to the old town or a familiar brand promise.
Grand Signature takes a different tack.
It doesn’t attempt to recreate heritage in a curated, slightly theatrical way. Instead, it presents something closer to the real thing, imperfect, lived-in, and all the more compelling for it.
That distinction matters. Particularly to travellers who have seen enough “authentic experiences” to know when they’re being gently managed.
The Bigger Picture
For the industry, this is more than a pleasant success story.
It’s a reminder, perhaps overdue, that luxury doesn’t always need to announce itself at volume. In fact, the most effective expressions of it rarely do.
Hoi An, for all its global recognition, has often been treated as a supporting act in Vietnam itineraries. A place you pass through, admire, and move on from.
Grand Signature suggests a different proposition: stay a little longer. Pay a little more attention. There’s more here than you think.
And if the judges at the Luxury Lifestyle Awards are anything to go by, the wider market is starting to agree.
