Travel Manitoba in central Canada, has joined Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) for the first time as a result of growing expedition cruising interest into the province, specifically in Churchill, which has become an expedition cruise hub, due to its unparalleled access to subarctic wildlife.

Churchill, is renowned to be the Polar Bear Capital of the World, allowing cruises to view polar bears in summer as well as beluga whale migrations and the Northern Lights.

The membership will also see Travel Manitoba participate in Cruise360 Australasia in September 2026, highlighting the growing appeal of small expedition cruise ships visiting Churchill, including Scenic Eclipse and Atlas Ocean Voyages visiting in 2027.

Both expedition ships will operate turnaround itineraries into Churchill. This will allow guests to fully immerse themselves in the region through curated land and water-based experiences before disembarking or continuing onward.

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) Executive Director in Australasia Joel Katz said Travel Manitoba was joining at an exciting time for expedition cruising.

“Expedition cruising has become one of the richest areas of possibility in cruising, reflecting a huge global interest in experiencing the pristine destinations that are often best reached by sea,” Mr Katz said. “The world’s expedition cruise fleet is forecast to grow its capacity by 150% over this decade, which presents huge possibilities for travellers to explore the extraordinary wildlife and landscapes of destinations like Churchill, Manitoba.”

“Travel Manitoba’s new membership with CLIA and participation in Cruise360 Australasia reflects on our commitment to supporting travel advisors to learn more about expedition cruise market visiting the province,” added Melanie Swenarchuk, Senior Manager, Market Development, Travel Manitoba.

Expanding on the land offerings, expedition cruises into Churchill offer travellers a rare opportunity to explore one of the world’s most pristine wilderness regions.  Many of the Churchill region operators are also welcoming guests pre and post cruise for multi day land programs.

Experiences include:

  • Beluga Whale Viewing – Churchill is world-famous for its seasonal migrations of Beluga Whale, with peak viewing in the Churchill River estuary during expedition cruise season.
  • Tundra and Wildlife Safaris – Guests can explore expansive tundra landscapes, home to species such as the Arctic Fox and numerous migratory birds, as well as Polar Bears.
