Rosewood Bangkok is proud to announce its latest exhibition at The Gallery, featuring the evocative works of acclaimed artist Wattana Wattanapun. In collaboration with Ayarta Official, the exhibition, titled Woven Weaver: Thai Textile, re-woven through contradiction, will be available for viewing with complimentary admission from now until June 30, 2026. Consistent with Rosewood Bangkok’s commitment to championing local Thai creativity, this exhibition transforms the 3rd-floor Gallery into a space where heritage meets modern abstraction. Woven Weaver explores the intricate beauty of Lanna motifs, traditionally found in Northern Thai fabrics, and reinterprets them through the lens of visual oxymoron.
THE INTERSECTION OF TRADITION AND CONTRADICTION
The concept of Woven Weaver is rooted in the linguistic idea of an oxymoron—the juxtaposition of contradictory elements. Wattanapun translates this literary device into a visual medium by “weaving” textile patterns not with thread, but with paint. By shifting these motifs from functional cloth to fine art, he creates a deliberate tension between the softness of textile history and the bold permanence of contemporary painting.
Working with oil, acrylic, and gold leaf, Wattanapun’s pieces invite viewers to deconstruct their understanding of Thai craftsmanship. The patterns do not merely decorate the canvas; they challenge the boundary between traditional craft and high art.
ABOUT THE ARTIST: WATTANA WATTANAPUN
Wattana Wattanapun is a distinguished figure in the global art community. A graduate of Silpakorn University and the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), his career spans Thailand, the United States, and Canada. Wattanapun has held visiting professorships at prestigious institutions such as Oberlin College and Simon Fraser University.
Currently serving as an academic consultant for the Faculty of Fine Arts at Chiang Mai University, his work is held in private and public collections worldwide, celebrated for its ability to bring pattern, symbol, and “craft-language” into the realm of professional painting.
