There are partnerships that quietly pad out a brochure, and then there are the ones that tell you exactly where a wholesaler thinks the market is heading.
Sun Island Tours’ new alliance with French cruise stalwart CroisiEurope falls firmly into the latter camp.
The Mediterranean specialist has signed on as a preferred sales agent for CroisiEurope across Australia and New Zealand, adding a fresh layer of small-ship muscle to its already well-worn European playbook. And in a market where travellers are drifting away from floating skyscrapers in favour of something more personal, the timing feels less coincidental and more calculated.
At the heart of the deal are CroisiEurope’s coastal sailings through the Mediterranean and Adriatic, which prioritise intimacy over scale. Think boutique sea-going vessels like MS La Belle de l’Adriatique and MS La Belle des Océans, ships built for slipping into the kinds of ports mega-liners simply glide past.
The itineraries themselves read like a greatest-hits album with a few rare B-sides thrown in. Italy, the Greek Islands, Croatia, all the usual headliners, but with enough lesser-visited stops to keep seasoned travellers interested and agents armed with a point of difference.
For Sun Island Tours joint CEO John Polyviou, the partnership lands squarely in the sweet spot.
“CroisiEurope Coastal Program is a perfect fit for Sun Island Tours; they are a premium operator with a strong reputation and an incredibly diverse program across both coastal and river cruising,” Polyviou said. “For our clients, it means more small-ship cruise options across the Mediterranean, including itineraries that combine iconic highlights with lesser-visited ports.”
That last point matters. The trade knows full well that clients still want the icons Santorini sunsets aren’t going anywhere, but they also want bragging rights. Smaller ships deliver both, and wholesalers who can package that balance tend to win repeat business.
Importantly, the tie-up isn’t limited to sea breezes and island hops. Sun Island Tours will also open the door to CroisiEurope’s European river cruise network, giving agents access to a fleet that stretches across the continent’s great waterways. With around 50 ships and barges and close to 200,000 passengers annually, CroisiEurope is hardly a niche name, just one that has flown slightly under the radar in this market until now.
For CroisiEurope’s Asia Pacific director Naidah Yazdani, the appeal of the partnership is straightforward: plug into a wholesaler that already understands the Mediterranean inside out.
“CroisiEurope is delighted to partner with Sun Island Tours as a Preferred Sales Agent for Australia and New Zealand,” Yazdani said. “Sun Island Tours has built a strong reputation as the leading wholesaler for the Mediterranean and for supporting the travel trade. Together, we look forward to helping more travellers discover the charm of small-ship cruising, from the Mediterranean’s coastline and islands through to Europe’s great rivers.”
Behind the scenes, the rollout will be unapologetically trade-first. Expect training sessions, curated packages, and plenty of itinerary storytelling to give consultants confidence to sell beyond the obvious.
And that’s where this partnership may have its biggest ripple effect.
Australian and Kiwi travellers have long had a love affair with the Med, but their tastes are evolving. Bigger isn’t always better anymore. The post-pandemic traveller is more intentional, more curious — and often more willing to pay for experiences that feel curated rather than commoditised.
Smaller ships tap neatly into that mood. They dock closer, linger longer and trade water slides for wine lists. For agents, they offer a narrative that sells itself: fewer crowds, more connections.
For Sun Island Tours, the CroisiEurope move reinforces a reputation built over decades of a wholesaler that knows its patch and doubles down when the winds shift.
For the trade, it’s another reminder that the Mediterranean still has plenty of stories left; you just need a smaller ship to hear them properly.
