Spread the love

Choose Chicago - LogoChicago, that grand old dame of Lake Michigan with more swagger than Sinatra in a tux, has just wrapped up what may well be the travel industry’s most dazzling love letter to inbound tourism in decades. IPW 2025 – the U.S. Travel Association’s marquee trade show – hit the Windy City like a gospel choir on caffeine, and Choose Chicago, the city’s plucky destination marketing organisation, played conductor with pitch-perfect finesse.

From opening curtain at the Field Museum to the grand finale fireworks over Navy Pier, it wasn’t just about rubbing elbows and swapping brochures – this was Chicago’s grand audition to charm the socks off the global tourism elite. And by Jove, didn’t she deliver.

An Event with More Punch than a Deep-Dish Pizza

More than 5,000 delegates from 64 countries turned up, representing everyone from international tour operators to heavyweight travel media. There were meetings, media showcases, culinary flirtations, riverside receptions, and more backroom deals than a Chicago alderman’s lunch tab.

Kristen Reynolds, the ever-ebullient President and CEO of Choose Chicago, couldn’t have been prouder:

“We wanted to show the world that Chicago isn’t just a stopover – it’s the main event. From the Field Museum’s karaoke rooms to Navy Pier’s Playcation bash, we made it unforgettable.”

And unforgettable it was. The sheer pageantry was staggering.

Opening Night at the Field: Disco Amongst Dinosaurs

Where else but Chicago could you kick off a global trade fair by doing the Macarena next to a triceratops? Delegates tucked into Chicago’s finest nosh, danced through a silent disco, and even belted out karaoke classics among taxidermied mammals. The opening night party was, as they say, part Jurassic Park, part jazz club.

Meanwhile, the city’s new tourism slogan was revealed – “Never Done. Never Outdone.” Frankly, it’s the sort of punchy confidence we’ve come to expect from a city that names its baseball team after white hosiery.

Wrigley Field Gets the Press Pack Singing

Sunday saw 500 international journalists corralled onto the warning track of Wrigley Field. There, amidst America’s ivy-clad shrine to sport, they were serenaded with a rousing rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” Leading the chorus? None other than Choose Chicago’s Kristen Reynolds, Chicago Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts, Mayor Brandon Johnson, and Geoff Freeman, CEO of the U.S. Travel Association.

It was enough to turn even the most jaded journalist into a Chicago Cubs convert – at least until the seventh inning stretch.

High Notes, Deep Dishes & a Skydeck Slice

Monday’s itinerary read like a Chicago bucket list. A First Lady cruise for the Japanese delegation down the city’s architectural arteries? Tick. A Magnificent Mile retail romp ending in a Maggie Speaks concert? You bet. And let’s not forget Pie in the Sky – a late-night pizza fête atop Skydeck Chicago, with bluesman Wayne Baker Brooks riffing like it was a South Side speakeasy.

Tuesday, things got even more local, with the city’s vibrant neighbourhoods taking centre stage. Guided tours, musical performances and culinary stops lit up Pilsen, West Town, and Hyde Park, proving that Chicago’s cultural clout stretches far beyond the Loop.

Numbers That Matter (and They’re Not in Fahrenheit)

IPW isn’t all jazz hands and giant flags (although the 50-foot Chicago flag over the convention booth was a show-stopper). Behind the fanfare lies serious business.

According to data released by Rockport Analytics, IPW 2025 is tipped to generate a whopping 10.9 million additional international visitors to the United States over the next three years. That’s $26.1 billion in fresh travel spend, supporting more than 63,000 jobs a year and ushering in $3.3 billion in tax revenue.

Chicago stands to scoop a large share of that golden pie.

Booth Brilliance: The Windy City’s Home Base at McCormick Place

Inside McCormick Place – America’s largest convention centre – Chicago’s trade booth was a masterpiece. The design, delivered in collaboration with FG|PG, featured original art by local legend Oscar Joyo and a claw machine that spat out local prizes faster than a barman at a Cubs win.

If the aim was to get the world talking, they nailed it. International media lapped it up. Travel buyers queued up. And some just stood there, wide-eyed, under that oversized flag.

The Power of Partnership (and Hot Dogs)

None of this magic happened solo. Choose Chicago was backed by the Illinois Office of Tourism, O’Hare and Midway Airports, and a parade of high-profile sponsors and partners. From Southwest Airlines to Wrigley Field Events, local unions to luxury hotels, everyone threw their hat in the ring.

Even local artists got a shoutout—giveaways featured work by Ariel Sinha, Sentrock and Blake Jones. For once, even the swag bags were Instagram-worthy.

What’s the Takeaway?

Chicago didn’t just host IPW 2025. It owned it. In a week that combined business with pleasure and big numbers with big-hearted hosting, the Windy City reminded the world that it’s still one of the world’s great urban symphonies – loud, proud, and impossible to ignore.

As U.S. Travel Association President Geoff Freeman put it, “IPW is more than a trade show – it’s America’s invitation to the world. And Chicago’s RSVP came with fireworks.”

Final Thoughts: From Windy to Winning

There’s something timeless about Chicago. Maybe it’s the architecture. Maybe it’s the lake breeze. Or maybe it’s the unshakable belief that a city, much like a great travel experience, is meant to be savoured, not rushed.

In hosting IPW 2025, Chicago didn’t reinvent the wheel. It simply put it atop Navy Pier, added a disco ball, served deep-dish under the stars, and said: “Hop on. We’ve saved you a seat.”

And with that, international tourism’s spotlight swings westward, but the glow on Chicago’s skyline will linger just a little longer.
