Thredbo Resort - LogoAs the southern chill creeps in and log fires roar back to life, Thredbo Resort is ready to drop the curtain on hibernation and kickstart the Australian winter season with a celebration that’s equal parts snow, spectacle and sheer alpine splendour.

Friday Flat to Open with 50cm Snowfall

In an encouraging nod from the weather gods, over 50cm of fresh snow has blanketed the mountains, setting the stage for Thredbo’s official winter launch this Saturday, 7 June. The ski resort will open its family-favourite terrain, Friday Flat, for skiing and snowboarding, including the Easy Does It Chairlift, Magic Carpets and a hike park for those ready to earn their early turns.

“This is the kind of start we dream about,” said Thredbo General Manager Stuart Diver, who was beaming with the news. “Thanks to our round-the-clock snowmaking team and a timely delivery from Mother Nature, we’re stoked to be spinning lifts on Opening Day. And with more snow in the forecast, we’re pushing to open more of the mountain as soon as possible.”

That’s right—ski boots on, bindings checked, and let the season begin.

Après-ski Meets Festival Fever

But Thredbo, in classic style, doesn’t just welcome winter—it throws it a party. And the 2025 Opening Weekend promises to be a cracker.

First up: Hot Dub Time Machine, the time-travelling DJ sensation presented by Balter, will take the stage at the Alpine Bar on Saturday at 3:30 pm. Expect tunes from every era, neon-drenched nostalgia, and one of the most joyous après dance parties this side of the equator.

Live music continues across the mountain with Thredbo’s beloved haunts—the Lounge Bar, Schuss Bar and Merritts Mountain House Deck—offering rhythm and refreshment in equal measure.

And for families, the whole village transforms into a winter wonderland:

  • Face painting and arts and crafts for the young and young at heart

  • Roving performers and street acts add a touch of whimsy

  • Toasty s’mores by the fire for that sweet alpine fix

Then at 6 pm on Saturday, prepare for lift-off—literally—with a fireworks spectacular lighting up the snowy sky and officially ringing in the snow season.

June Deals Too Good to Miss

For those who like their snow with a side of savings, June is shaping up to be an absolute bargain. Guests can slash up to 45% off accommodation at the Thredbo Alpine Hotel, making it easier than ever to squeeze in a cheeky weekend away or a longer mid-season escape.

Never clipped into skis before? No worries. Thredbo’s Learn to Ski & Ride packages are on offer starting from just $99 for adults and $129 for kids—an affordable invitation to take the plunge (or the gentle snowplough, as the case may be).

Families, first-timers, and powder hounds alike can find the complete list of deals and offers via Thredbo’s official website.

A True Mountain Tradition Begins Again

For decades, the start of the snow season in Thredbo has been more than a date on a calendar—it’s a cultural event. The rhythmic swish of skis on corduroy, the crunch of snow underfoot, the scent of glühwein and woodsmoke—these are the moments that signal winter’s rightful return.

And while Friday Flat may be the only run open to start, there’s a certain nostalgic charm to it. It’s where countless Australians took their first wobbly turns, where ski instructors shepherd nervous newbies like proud shepherds, and where kids fall over only to get up laughing.

This year, the mountain’s message is simple but stirring: Winter starts here. And if the opening weekend is anything to go by, it’s going to be one for the books.
