Chefs Strikes Gold At 2025 Queen’s Restaurant Challenge in MelbourneFijian owned Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort Chefs captured the Gold Medal at the prestigious 2025 Queen Restaurant Challenge, held at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre from May 19 – 20 during Food & Hospitality Week.

Endorsed by the World Chef’s Association and hosted by the Australian Culinary Federation, the Queen Challenge is one of the most elite events in the Asia Pacific region’s culinary calendar. This year, eight top-tier teams including international, regional and military culinary units competed in a high-pressure kitchen arena, preparing three-course meals for 25 guests and judges under live judging conditions.

Each team faced the ultimate culinary test to deliver precision, creativity and storytelling under immense pressure. With just a four-member brigade comprising a team manager, two qualified chefs and one kitchen hand, the challenge demanded not only technical excellence but also seamless cohesion, strategic planning and flawless execution.

Led by the Resort’s Executive Chef Rakesh Kumar who is also the President of the Fiji Chef Association, the team included:

  • Muni Vikash Chetty, Assistant Pastry Chef
  • Nemia Waqanivavalagi, Sous-Chef at Tatavu Grill & Bar
  • Ifraz Hussein, Junior Sous Chef

Their gold winning menu was a masterclass in storytelling through cuisine featuring ocean-inspired entrees with fresh Yasawa tuna, mains infused with local herbs from the Sheraton Fiji Farm, and desserts that celebrated Fiji’s tropical abundance. In addition to taste, the panel of international culinary judges appraised the team’s creativity, technical finesse and commitment to sustainability and cultural authenticity.

“Winning gold is validation of years of hard work and cultural pride,” said Executive Chef Rakesh after the announcement. “This wasn’t just about food – it was a showcase of Fiji story through every plate.”

This win marks a significant leap from last year’s Silver Medal finish in 2024 and affirms Sheraton Fiji’s growing influence on the global culinary stage.

Looking ahead, Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort will host its first internal culinary championship in 2026, replicating the Queen Challenge format to spotlight emerging talent within the resort. The competition will provide associates with an unprecedented opportunity to showcase their creativity, with winners earning a spot on the next international competition team.

“We’re not just celebrating gold,” said Chef Rakesh. “We’re investing it; into the next generation of Fijian chefs.”

Renowned for its commitment to local sourcing, innovative dining, and experiential hospitality, Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort continues to shape the future of Pacific cuisine. With this latest global accolade, the resort not only elevates its culinary legacy but also positions Fiji as a rising star in the world of fine dining.
