nib travel logoIn a sobering reminder of the risks associated with overseas travel, nib Travel, one of Australia’s leading travel insurance providers, has revealed that more than 40% of all claims filed in 2024 were for medical incidents. The data underscores the harsh financial realities travellers face when venturing abroad without adequate insurance and the potentially life-saving benefits of comprehensive coverage.

The statistics come amid growing global mobility and a surge in Australians heading overseas post-pandemic. Yet, behind the excitement of planning a dream getaway, a stark truth lingers: a single medical emergency can upend lives and result in exorbitant out-of-pocket expenses.

One case brought this reality into sharp focus. In 2024, nib Travel processed a staggering $3 million claim—the highest in the company’s records—for an Australian who fell ill while visiting the United States. What began as a minor medical concern escalated swiftly. The traveller was hospitalized for several weeks, placed in intensive care, and eventually airlifted back to Australia under the supervision of a specialised medical team.

“Travel is often an exciting journey, but reality can strike in an instant,” said Dylan Wilkinson, General Manager of International & Partnerships at nib Travel. “Most trips go off without a hitch, but when something does go wrong, especially medically, the financial consequences can be devastating.”

Indeed, nib’s 2024 data paints a broader picture of the costs tied to medical care during travel. While domestic travel within Australia accounted for 2,294 medical claims, totalling over $10 millioninternational destinations—especially the United StatesJapan, and Indonesiadelivered the most financially burdensome incidents. Although only 674 claims were lodged by travellers returning from the U.S., the total claim value matched the Australian figure at $10 million, driven by notoriously high healthcare costs and unfavourable currency exchange rates.

One particularly harrowing example involved a man injured while diving in Indonesia. After hitting his head on a coral reef, he sustained multiple injuries, including a fractured clavicle and spinal trauma. His condition required extended hospitalization and a costly medical repatriation to Australia, with his family’s travel plans disrupted indefinitely.

“Without travel insurance, these incidents could leave families financially crippled,” Wilkinson noted. “The cost of just one major medical claim can far surpass the total cost of a holiday.”

nib Travel’s coverage is designed to respond to such emergencies with immediacy and care. From dental emergencies to critical care evacuation, the provider’s policies encompass medical evacuation, repatriation, and even support for pre-existing conditions under select circumstances.

Beyond the financial safety net, the support provided during a medical crisis abroad is another vital aspect of travel insurance. Wilkinson explained that nib Travel works with an international network of specialist medical professionals and local hospitals, ensuring that travellers receive the necessary level of care—sometimes moving them from under-equipped rural clinics to advanced medical centres when required.

“Our 24/7 emergency assistance team is trained to coordinate everything—from the moment a traveller is admitted to a hospital to arranging air ambulances for repatriation,” said Wilkinson. “This isn’t just about reimbursement. It’s about saving lives and minimising trauma during high-stress, high-stakes situations.”

While some travellers may be tempted to forgo travel insurance to cut down on upfront costs, Wilkinson urges otherwise. “The real cost is not the premium—it’s being stranded overseas with a massive medical bill and no safety net. Insurance should be locked in at the time of booking, not as an afterthought.”

He adds that many travellers are unaware that their regular health insurance does not cover international treatment, making comprehensive travel insurance essential—not optional.

As Australians prepare for another busy year of international travel, nib Travel’s findings serve as a clarion call to the industry and public alike. The data not only validates the relevance of travel insurance—it demands a reevaluation of how travellers assess risk.

In a world of uncertainty, travel remains one of life’s great joys. But joy is best safeguarded by foresight. Whether you’re jetting off to Bali, trekking in the Rockies, or cruising the Pacific, a small investment in travel insurance could mean the difference between a minor hiccup and a life-altering ordeal.
