For the first time in the awards history, the top spot has been awarded to a cluster of beaches rather than a single stretch of sand. The 10-kilometre coastal expanse within the Bay of Fires Conservation Reserve—flanked by The Gardens to the north and Binalong Bay to the south—has captivated the hearts of locals and global travellers alike.
An Expert’s Seal of Approval
Brad Farmer AM, an esteemed advocate for Australian coastlines and a Tourism Australia ‘Friend of Australia,’ meticulously evaluated nearly 12,000 beaches across the nation’s mainland and surrounding islands before making his final decision. His extensive research and travels brought him face-to-face with Tasmania’s breathtaking coastal landscapes.
“Tasmania’s beaches are often overlooked due to the cooler waters, but the pristine beauty and untouched nature of the Bay of Fires are undeniable,” said Mr Farmer. “I spent considerable time assessing Tasmania’s beaches, and in the end, there were so many incredible options that I couldn’t settle on just one. For the first time, I’m awarding the title to a collective of neighbouring beach bays within the Bay of Fires.”
He continued, “They say colder water is good for the soul—and while a refreshing dip might not be for everyone, the Bay of Fires offers endless activities. From world-class photography and painting opportunities to fishing and surfing, it’s a coastal paradise.”
Celebrating Australia’s Coastal Diversity
While Tasmania took the crown, the competition was fierce. Woolgoolga in New South Wales secured the title of the best mainland beach, earning a respectable second place overall. Emily Bay Lagoon on Norfolk Island rounded out the top three, securing bronze with its serene lagoon and crystal-clear waters.
Mr Farmer emphasized the diversity of Australia’s beaches in his announcement. “Every beach that makes the list is a winner.
