Pedestrian walkways and leisure facilities along the Airport Tung Ching Link.Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) is on the verge of a significant transformation. With its visionary Airport City Blueprint, the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) is redefining what it means to be a world-class aviation hub. Positioned at the crossroads of international travel and commerce, the expansion aims to establish Hong Kong as a top global destination for business, tourism, and culture. The scale and ambition of this project will see Airport City evolve into a landmark like no other in Asia, leveraging Hong Kong’s strategic location to drive economic growth across the region.

A Vision of Synergy and Innovation

Initially revealed in 2019, the Airport City Blueprint integrates the airport’s core functions with a diverse range of business, retail, cultural, and entertainment sectors, creating a dynamic synergy. This approach aims to capture the full potential of Hong Kong’s geographic advantages, including its proximity to the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and the economic prospects of new infrastructure like the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.

Several key projects have already come to life as part of the Airport City vision. Completing three Grade-A office towers and a brand-new hotel marks the beginning of this bold transformation. However, the true game-changer lies ahead with the development of 11 SKIES, an expansive retail, dining, and entertainment complex set to open in phases starting in 2025. This integration of business and leisure marks a new era for Airport City, positioning it to compete with the world’s most iconic commercial hubs.

An Unparalleled Expansion of Scale

The expanded blueprint will double the development scale by capitalizing on the underutilized land resources between Hong Kong Port Island and Tung Chung. This ambitious vision will include high-profile projects that further cement Hong Kong’s position as a world-class destination.

AsiaWorld-Expo Phase 2 will include a multi-purpose indoor arena with seating capacity of over 20,000 people.

Several groundbreaking ventures are expected to open between 2026 and 2031, including a state-of-the-art art ecosystem, a revitalized AsiaWorld Expo, and Hong Kong’s largest marina. Each of these developments is designed to foster high-end commercial activity, luxury tourism, and vibrant cultural experiences.

A Future Hub for Global Art and Culture

One of the most innovative aspects of the Airport City project is the development of an art ecosystem, a first-of-its-kind initiative in Hong Kong. This facility will bring together art creation, appreciation, and trade under one roof, offering galleries, studios, and exhibition spaces. To support this vision, a bespoke storage facility will be built specifically for artworks—another first in Hong Kong—creating synergy with the AsiaWorld-Expo. This ecosystem will further propel Hong Kong’s reputation as a global art marketplace and cultural powerhouse, drawing collectors and enthusiasts worldwide.

Another monumental development within the Airport City expansion is the Phase 2 development of AsiaWorld-Expo. Set to include Hong Kong’s largest multi-purpose indoor arena with a seating capacity of over 20,000 people, this facility will be capable of hosting world-class entertainment events, international trade exhibitions, and global conventions. This move will further attract high-profile visitors across the Greater Bay Area and the globe, establishing Hong Kong as a destination for international cultural and commercial exchanges.

Marina to Anchor Luxury Yacht Tourism

To maximize the potential of Hong Kong’s coastal waters, the Airport City project also includes plans for the largest marina in the region, featuring around 600 berths. This ambitious project will position Hong Kong as a leading destination for luxury yacht tourism in Asia, particularly within the affluent Greater Bay Area. The marina will be complemented by various water-based leisure and recreational activities, reinforcing the city’s appeal as a premium tourism destination.

Enhancing Public Spaces and Leisure Opportunities

The blueprint also enhances public spaces and recreational facilities to create a more inclusive and vibrant community. The coastlines of Airport Island and Hong Kong Port Island will see the development of distinctive promenades, hotels, and cultural venues. These interconnected areas will enable a seamless flow of leisure, artistic, and entertainment events. A new sportainment complex planned for Hong Kong Port Island will blend indoor and outdoor sports, adventure, and entertainment, catering to locals and international visitors.

Jet Fresh Market: A Gourmet Haven with a View

Capitalizing on its position as a leader in air cargo, HKIA is developing a Jet Fresh Market, consolidating Hong Kong’s reputation as a global hub for premium fresh food imports. This market will offer a unique gastronomy experience, with breathtaking views of aircraft in motion. Tourists and locals alike will enjoy unparalleled access to high-end food products from across the globe, further elevating Hong Kong’s status as a world-class destination for culinary tourism.

Fred Lam’s Bold Vision for Hong Kong

In an interview, Fred Lam, Chairman of AAHK, expressed his confidence in the project’s transformative impact on Hong Kong’s economy: “With the three-runway system fully operational by the end of this year, we are poised to push forward innovative projects that will redefine Hong Kong’s international standing. Our vision is to leverage the city’s unique advantages and create a landmark that attracts visitors from the Greater Bay Area and across the globe. This expansion will inject fresh energy into Hong Kong’s economy and elevate the Airport City to a global landmark.”

A New Era of Growth and Globalization

The expansion of Airport City is a bold and strategic move that will shape Hong Kong’s future as a global leader in aviation, business, tourism, and culture. As these innovative projects come to life over the next decade, the city will enhance its standing in the region and secure its place on the world stage as an international hub for luxury, leisure, and commerce.
