SITE - LogoThe 2024 Incentive Travel Index (ITI) has unveiled optimistic projections for the incentive travel sector, anticipating steady growth through 2026 despite emerging challenges. Released at IMEX America to an audience of business event leaders, this year’s report, conducted by the Incentive Research Foundation (IRF) and the Society for Incentive Travel Excellence (SITE) in partnership with Oxford Economics, offers a comprehensive outlook on industry trends and strategic considerations.

Industry Confidence Persists Despite Rising Costs

The ITI 2024 reveals a buoyant sentiment among incentive travel buyers, with the majority forecasting an increase in activity and per-person spending levels over the next two years. However, concerns loom over rising costs, ongoing talent acquisition struggles, and heightened safety considerations. These issues push industry players to rethink their strategies and adapt to a rapidly changing landscape.

“The strategic importance of incentive travel is being bolstered by key workplace trends,” said Stephanie Harris, President of IRF. “Retaining talented employees and maintaining a competitive edge in hiring are cited as growing priorities, alongside evolving dynamics such as accommodating a more dispersed workforce and addressing the expectations of new generations of qualifiers and leaders.”

Evolving Preferences: New Destinations and Inclusive Experiences

According to the report, over 70% of incentive travel buyers actively seek out new and unique destinations, indicating a shift towards more exclusive and diverse offerings. SITE CEO Annette Gregg emphasized this trend: “Resorts—both all-inclusive and traditional—are experiencing a surge in demand, and there’s a marked preference for destinations that are in closer proximity to participants’ origins.”

The findings also highlight a rising interest in experiences that incorporate wellness, environmental sustainability, and technology-driven engagements. Buyers increasingly prioritise experiences aligning with corporate values, including programs incorporating climate-conscious practices and advanced tech integrations.

Technology, Sustainability, and the Future of Incentive Travel

Beyond destination preferences, the 2024 ITI addresses hot-button topics such as the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in event planning, climate issues, and the expanding focus on sustainability. Once a complementary tool, technology is now seen as a critical component for shaping participant experiences and optimizing program logistics. AI-driven personalization and real-time data analytics pave the way for more engaging and tailored travel incentives.

“Today’s incentive travel programs must go beyond traditional reward experiences,” said Maggie Worthington of Hilton. “They need to resonate on a personal level, with sustainability and inclusivity at the forefront.”

Expert Insights and a Strategic Outlook

The 2024 ITI was launched with a robust panel discussion led by IRF’s Stephanie Harris and SITE’s Pádraic Gilligan. Expert insights from industry veterans, including Jennifer Attersall of Destination Canada and Justin Myers of Bishop-McCann, accompanied the discussion. The panellists emphasized that while the road ahead will require adaptation, the incentive travel sector remains resilient and well-positioned for growth.

“Understanding shifting preferences and embracing new opportunities will be crucial for success,” added Attersall. “The industry’s ability to innovate will determine its trajectory in the coming years.”
