Crown Sydney has successfully retained its casino licence in a decisive ruling that underscores its commitment to ethical practices and industry standards. This announcement follows a similar affirmation for Crown Melbourne by the Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission, highlighting a unified approach to regulatory compliance across Crown Resorts’ operations.
Crown Resorts has undergone a significant transformation, investing over $200 million in a sweeping overhaul that addresses harm minimisation, financial crime, governance, compliance, and risk management. New ownership and executive leadership catalysed these reforms following Blackstone’s acquisition in June 2022. Noteworthy among these changes is the establishment of new Boards, including Crown Sydney’s, under the leadership of Chairman John Borghetti.
Crown Sydney has set a new standard in the industry with its pioneering initiatives to curb financial crimes, notably being the first in New South Wales to implement cashless gaming on all Electronic Table Games (ETGs). Its Crown PlaySafe program has positioned the establishment as the safest gambling venue in the state.
As Crown Sydney continues collaborating with the New South Wales Independent Casino Commission (NICC), it remains dedicated to surpassing regulatory expectations and setting benchmarks in the casino industry. The NICC, led by Chief Commissioner Philip Crawford, has recognized these efforts as part of today’s favourable decision.
Since its launch in December 2020, the $2.2 billion Crown Sydney resort has become a cornerstone of the Barangaroo district, drawing millions of visitors with its award-winning dining options, a world-class hotel, and significant contributions to the Sydney skyline.
Further affirming its commitment to ongoing improvement, Crown Perth is also advancing its remediation initiatives, with a comprehensive plan to be presented by January 2025.
Crown Sydney CEO Mark McWhinnie remarked on the transformative journey since the casino’s opening, emphasizing the extensive internal reforms and the NICC’s recognition of their effectiveness. He expressed gratitude towards the NICC for its support and affirmed that the journey of continuous improvement is far from over.
Echoing this sentiment, Crown Resorts CEO Ciarán Carruthers highlighted the radical transformation under Blackstone’s stewardship, which has redefined the company’s operations and strengthened its market position. He acknowledged the importance of maintaining public trust and regulatory compliance as integral to their operations.
Today’s outcome not only reaffirms Crown Sydney’s licence but also reinforces its role as a leader in responsible gambling and an exemplar of corporate integrity in the competitive world of luxury resorts and casinos.
As Crown Resorts continues to build on its reforms and uphold its commitments to stakeholders, its focus remains steadfast on being a beacon of excellence and trust within the community and the broader hospitality industry.
