Flight Centre - Corporate Traveller - logoIn a remarkable shift in travel trends, Australian corporates increasingly opt for the luxury of Business and First Class air travel. Data from Flight Centre Travel Group’s corporate divisions, FCM Travel and Corporate Traveller, reveals a 43% year-over-year increase in 2023.

The allure of luxury travel is unmistakably on the rise, with Business Class bookings constituting 5.6% of all corporate travel in 2023, a significant leap from 4% in the previous year. First Class travel has similarly seen an uptick, rising to 3% of bookings from 2% in the same period. This trend clearly indicates businesses prioritizing comfort, well-being, and status for their employees despite a general hike in airfares across all classes.

Interestingly, the surge in premium travel comes when Economy and Premium Economy classes are witnessing a decline in popularity among corporate travellers, dropping by 2.4%. This shift speaks volumes about today’s corporate traveller’s changing priorities and expectations.

Melissa Elf, Global COO of FCM and MD for ANZ at Flight Centre Corporate, interprets this trend as a sign of robust business activities. “The growing preference for front-end seats is a reflection of growth and stability in Australian businesses,” she explains. During a period riddled with economic uncertainties, this trend underscores the indispensable role of travel in business success and survival.

Business travel, as studies suggest, is closely linked to economic growth. With predictions of inflation levelling off, a corresponding increase in corporate travel activity is anticipated. Elf notes that Premium Economy has experienced the most significant drop despite fluctuations in Economy bookings, indicating a shift in traveller preferences.

Focusing on health, well-being, and productivity increasingly drives business or First Class. “For many corporate travellers, the decision to opt for higher travel classes is about getting adequate rest on overnight flights or staying productive during daytime travel,” Elf adds. The additional fare cost is justifiable for time-strapped corporate travellers, enhancing overall wellness and productivity.

Elf also emphasizes the importance of being well-informed when booking travel. Understanding the offerings of different airlines and aircraft types is crucial, especially when comparing Business and First Class services. Corporate travel management companies are pivotal in ensuring travellers maximize these benefits.

This significant rise in luxury travel among Australian corporates is more than a mere trend; it’s a statement about the evolving landscape of corporate travel, where comfort and efficiency are paramount.
