Hilton strengthens its luxury leadership team as Waldorf Astoria Sydney prepares to make a grand entrance at Circular Quay.

Some hotel openings arrive with a ribbon, a speech and a well-rehearsed smile. Others require a formidable commercial game plan long before the first guest checks in.

Waldorf Astoria Sydney is firmly in the second camp. The Hilton luxury brand has appointed Mark Newey as Commercial Director ahead of its scheduled Australian debut at One Circular Quay in 2027, placing an experienced Sydney hotel executive at the centre of a high-profile harbourfront launch.

Newey will oversee the commercial strategy that turns an enviable address into sustained business. His brief spans sales, marketing, revenue management, strategic partnerships, and demand generation, with a focus on luxury leisure travellers, corporate clients, and meetings and events.

With Sydney Harbour, the Opera House, and the Harbour Bridge providing the scenery, nobody is likely to complain about the view. The greater challenge is ensuring that the promise matches the postcard.

Luxury hotel experience that matters

Newey brings substantial experience in Australia’s premium hotel sector. Most recently, he served as Portfolio Director of Sales and Marketing for InterContinental Sydney, InterContinental Hayman Great Barrier Reef and InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort.

That portfolio demanded more than a flair for a glossy brochure. It involved commercial leadership across luxury leisure, corporate travel, group business, dining, digital channels and international markets.

For Waldorf Astoria Sydney, the appointment brings local market knowledge alongside experience managing distinct luxury properties and their different audiences.

General manager Marlene Poynder described the opening as an important moment for both Hilton and Sydney.

“Waldorf Astoria Sydney will be a landmark opening for Hilton and for the city,” she said in the appointment announcement.

She also praised Newey’s understanding of the luxury market, saying: “He brings proven commercial leadership, a strong understanding of luxury travellers and first-hand insight into Sydney’s evolving hotel landscape.”

Circular Quay prepares for a new luxury address

Owned and developed by Fiveight, Waldorf Astoria Sydney will occupy a prime position within the One Circular Quay development. Hilton confirms that the property is scheduled to open in 2027, marking the Waldorf Astoria brand’s first hotel in Australia.

The project has already attracted attention beyond the accommodation market. Melbourne-born chef Curtis Stone is developing two original dining experiences for the property, aiming to make the hotel a destination for Sydneysiders as well as visitors.

For travel advisers and luxury travel partners, Newey’s appointment is especially relevant. His task includes building relationships and commercial pathways to position the property in domestic and international markets ahead of opening.

A celebrated name and an outstanding harbour location provide an impressive starting point. But in luxury hospitality, reputation is ultimately built one guest experience at a time.

Waldorf Astoria Sydney has chosen the executive to help translate that considerable promise into bookings. The opening countdown is on.
