Travel + Leisure Co., a leading leisure travel company, is preparing to open its newly refurbished ski-in/ski-out resort in Shiga Kogen, Nagano, Asia’s largest ski precinct and one of Japan’s leading mountain destinations.
Acquired earlier in 2026, the 16-room resort has been rebranded and is slated to welcome Club Wyndham owners and guests from winter to Shiga Kogen, which boasts Japan’s highest skiable terrain at a peak elevation of 2,307 metres.
Since purchasing the resort, Travel + Leisure Co. has undertaken an extensive refurbishment, preserving the character of a traditional Japanese mountain resort while introducing Western-style comforts, including raised bedding in select rooms. As part of the project, the lobby will receive a light refresh, while the ski rental room and ski lockers will be newly upgraded.
Club Wyndham Maruike Shiga Kogen is located near Club Wyndham Shirakabaso Shiga Kogen, creating the potential for a dual-resort experience that allows owners and guests to enjoy an expanded range of dining, beverage and recreation experiences across both properties.
The neighbouring Club Wyndham Shirakabaso features onsen hot springs, a whisky bar, a lobby café, a pizza restaurant and a full-service ski rental and retail shop offering a range of premium ski equipment and rental options. Just an hour’s drive away is Club Wyndham Chikumakan Nagano, a traditional ryokan resort that blends authentic Japanese hospitality with Western touches and offers both indoor and outdoor onsen.
The opening of the new resort will strengthen the company’s presence in regional Japan, one of the world’s most desirable year-round travel destinations. While famous for its winter sports, Shiga Kogen is equally compelling in the summer, drawing visitors to Joshin’etsukogen National Park for its scenic mountain biking, trekking, spectacular volcanic landscapes, emerald lakes and wildlife sightings including golden eagles, Japanese stoats and the iconic snow monkeys.
“This purchase and opening of this resort are a strategic move to expand our presence in regional Japan,” said Barry Robinson, President and Managing Director, International Operations, at Travel + Leisure Co.
“It gives us economies of scale and greater potential to offer guests enhanced experiences in a location we see growing in popularity as a year-round destination. Through our presence in this region, we intend to elevate Shiga Kogen’s status as a ski precinct to local and international tourists, create additional employment locally, and contribute to the expansion of Nagano’s tourism industry.”
The ski-in/ski-out property is steps away from the nearest chairlift to the ski fields of Shiga Kogen, a 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics skiing and snowboarding venue offering over 400 hectares connected by a network of chairlifts and gondolas. Through these resorts, Travel + Leisure Co. remains the only international hospitality operator in the Joshin’estu National Park.
Guests will also be within easy reach of the region’s other top attractions, such as Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park, the beautifully preserved Narai Juku post town, Zenkoji Temple, the historic Matsushiro Samurai School, and the sacred Togakushi Okusha Shrine and Forest Reserve.
The resort will welcome public guests alongside owners and members of two vacation clubs developed by Travel + Leisure Co., Club Wyndham South Pacific and Club Wyndham Asia.
Travel + Leisure Co. currently manages around 100 properties in Asia Pacific, including 21 in Japan, and operates four major shared-ownership vacation clubs – Club Wyndham South Pacific, Club Wyndham Asia, Accor Vacation Club, and Accor Vacation Club Asia Pacific – which together serve more than 100,000 members.
