Virgin Australia has put Queensland firmly within holiday reach, releasing half a million discounted fares as Australians begin plotting their 2027 escapes.
The headline price is a tempting $69 one-way Economy Lite fare between Sydney and the Gold Coast. It is the sort of figure that can turn idle lunchtime browsing into a confirmed booking before the boss returns from a meeting.
The seven-day Queensland sale covers selected flights to Brisbane, Cairns, the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Hamilton Island. Eligible travel dates extend from 5 January to 22 June 2027, giving travellers options across summer, autumn and the opening weeks of winter.
Virgin Australia’s sale began at 12:01 am AEST on 31 August and closes at 11:59 pm AEST on Sunday, 6 September 2026, unless the allocated seats sell out earlier. The airline’s original media release incorrectly described 6 September as a Tuesday; the calendar, that stubborn old authority, confirms it is Sunday. Queensland fares take flight
Among the sharper offers are Sydney–Sunshine Coast fares from $75, Brisbane–Cairns from $95 and Melbourne–Gold Coast from $95. Canberra travellers can also reach the Gold Coast from $95, while Sydney–Brisbane services start at $109.
The island holiday has not been forgotten. Brisbane–Hamilton Island fares begin at $125, Sydney–Hamilton Island at $145 and Melbourne–Hamilton Island at $179.
Further west, Perth–Brisbane fares start at $249. Darwin–Brisbane begins at $189, while Adelaide–Brisbane and Canberra–Brisbane services are available from $175.
Selected sale fares are valid in either direction, subject to availability. That is helpful because, splendid though Queensland may be, most visitors will eventually need to return home.
Virgin Australia Chief Marketing and Sustainability Officer Libby Minogue said the promotion gives Australians opportunities to visit Queensland throughout several seasons.
“Queensland is the perfect escape, whether you’re planning a summer getaway or looking to chase some winter sun,” Ms Minogue said.
She encouraged travellers to book early, noting that the sale offers value from the height of summer through to the cooler months.
More than a cheap seat
Queensland Tourism Minister Andrew Powell said the state’s coastline, regional centres and outback experiences continued to give visitors fresh reasons to return. The Queensland Parliament confirmed his ministerial position.
The sale should provide welcome support for Queensland’s tourism economy, particularly regional accommodation operators, attractions, restaurants and tour businesses. A discounted airline seat, after all, rarely travels alone. It usually brings a hotel booking, several restaurant bills and at least one purchase made under the influence of tropical sunshine.
Travellers should nevertheless examine the fare conditions before reaching for the credit card. The lowest advertised prices are generally Economy Lite fares. Checked baggage and advance standard-seat selection are not included, while payment surcharges may apply.
Economy Lite cancellations are not permitted, and flight changes may attract a fee and any applicable fare difference. Virgin Australia advises that these fares may not suit travellers requiring flexibility. The airline’s official Queensland sale announcement details the full restrictions.
The arithmetic remains persuasive for travellers who can commit to firm dates and travel lightly. With fares beginning below the cost of many restaurant dinners, Queensland’s beaches, cities and islands have issued a convincing invitation.
The only real challenge may be deciding between the Gold Coast’s bright lights, Cairns’ tropical warmth and Hamilton Island’s habit of making Monday morning feel very far away.
