In light of Jetstar’s decision to start charging customers for overhead carry on, thought our research on lost luggage which might be of interest.
Among those who lost their bags:
-
Nearly 7% said their luggage was never returned.
-
A lucky 18% got their luggage back within 24 hours but the vast majority (62%) waited several days – potentially shouldering the cost of extra clothes and toiletries during delays. Around 13% saw their luggage returned after a week or more.
-
78.5% received no compensation from their airline.
-
Those who did receive compensation reported a median payout of $400.
-
While the majority of Australian flyers with lost bags did not lodge a claim with their travel insurers, 17.1% reported not having any travel insurance cover whatsoever.
Airlines adding charges for carry-on luggage is another major pricing pressure for travels already on tight budgets this year.
And, if the decision sees more passengers upgrade to checked luggage options, (eg. families sharing a single checked suitcase instead of several carry-on ports) it raises questions about whether more Australians could find themselves dealing with delayed, lost or damaged luggage as well.
