There are travel trade shows, and then there are those capable of changing what an adviser confidently recommends on Monday morning. ITE HCMC 2026 looks determined to belong to the latter camp.

The 20th International Travel Expo Ho Chi Minh City will be held from 27 to 29 August 2026 at the Saigon Exhibition and Convention Centre under the theme “Vibrant Connections – Global Destinations”. Organisers expect more than 500 exhibitors, 260 international buyers from more than 32 countries and territories, and more than 30,000 visitors.

That is rather more substantial than a hall full of brochures, bowls of wrapped sweets and sales representatives nervously guarding the last working power point.

For Australian travel advisers, the event deserves serious consideration. Vietnam is no longer a destination confined to inexpensive touring and a quick bowl of pho between sightseeing stops. Its tourism offering now spans luxury travel, cruising, golf, wellness, medical tourism, family holidays, meetings and incentives, specialist touring, and increasingly sophisticated independent itineraries.

ITE HCMC’s exhibitor profile is expected to include hotels and resorts, airlines, transportation businesses, tourism authorities, tour operators, online travel agencies, attractions, cruise and golf specialists, medical and wellness providers, training institutions, and travel technology companies.

That breadth gives advisers an opportunity to compare products, question suppliers and identify experiences that may not yet have reached the familiar distribution channels.

Business rather than brochure collecting

The supplied promotional trailer makes the commercial purpose abundantly clear. It shows appointment tables, busy exhibition aisles, tourism forums, destination presentations and a great many purposeful handshakes.

Some statistics shown in the video appear to be historical promotional figures rather than confirmed 2026 projections. For accuracy, the more useful benchmark is the official 2025 result: 256 international buyers from 32 markets, more than 500 exhibiting organisations and brands, 46,100 visitors and 20,050 business meetings.

For 2026, formal buyer–seller meetings are scheduled for 27 and 28 August, supported by speed-networking sessions, tourism seminars, discussions, destination presentations and a high-level tourism forum. The provisional program also includes official receptions, Viet Nam Night and post-show destination activities.

In other words, the intention is to have buyers conducting business, not merely wandering the floor, collecting tote bags with the optimism of someone who has forgotten the airline’s baggage limit.

A potentially valuable hosted-buyer opportunity

The Hosted Buyer Program targets senior decision-makers and professionals capable of developing travel into Vietnam and Southeast Asia. Eligible profiles include tour operators, wholesalers, travel agencies, online travel agencies, product managers, MICE planners, corporate travel buyers and specialist travel professionals.

Selected international buyers may receive four nights’ accommodation at a four- or five-star hotel, full-board meals, airport pickup, ground transportation, volunteer support and access to networking functions. Curated post-event destination tours may also be available.

However, advisers should read the conditions carefully. Economy-class return airfare is restricted to buyers approved for Fully Hosted Buyer status. Approved applicants must also pay US$500, comprising a non-refundable US$150 administration fee and a US$350 performance bond that is refundable after the relevant program obligations are completed.

Confirmed hosted buyers are required to complete at least 20 appointments and attend their scheduled activities. This is not a complimentary holiday that happens to include a lanyard. It is a commercial program for buyers prepared to arrive with genuine purchasing authority, product-development responsibilities and an orderly diary.

Quite right, too. The traditional bargain remains a good one: organisers invest in bringing qualified buyers to the table, and those buyers arrive prepared to do business.

Product knowledge that cannot be downloaded

A face-to-face conversation with a supplier can reveal what even the most polished website leaves unanswered.

Which itinerary works best for older travellers? Can a hotel reliably manage dietary requirements? Is that regional transfer comfortable, punctual and properly supported? Is the supposedly authentic experience truly authentic, or has it merely acquired a bamboo sign and a social media account?

These details matter because clients are becoming better informed and less tolerant of vague answers. An adviser who has questioned the operator, inspected the product or met the destination representative is usually better placed to sell it with confidence.

That confidence becomes particularly valuable when something goes wrong. Travel remains a people business, despite the industry’s determined campaign to replace every human conversation with a password, a verification code, and a chatbot called Kevin.

Knowing a dependable destination management company, hotel representative, or tourism official can make a considerable difference when flights change, the weather intervenes, or a client requires urgent assistance.

Ho Chi Minh City becomes part of the classroom

The destination itself adds another layer of value.

Advisers attending ITE HCMC can assess Ho Chi Minh City’s accommodation, dining, transport, attractions and touring potential firsthand. The provisional program includes an optional pre-show tour on 24 August and an optional post-show tour for hosted buyers and hosted media on 29 August, although organisers state that the schedule remains subject to change.

That firsthand knowledge can later strengthen itinerary design, client consultations, presentations and marketing content. “I have been there” still carries considerable weight, possibly because travellers understand it cannot be generated before breakfast by pressing a button.

An award-winning trade platform

ITE HCMC has also collected credible recognition. It was named Asia’s Best MICE Tradeshow at the World MICE Awards in both 2024 and 2025. Awards alone do not guarantee commercial returns, but consecutive wins indicate that the event has developed beyond the handsome opening ceremony and ceremonial ribbon.

Advisers who do not qualify for the Hosted Buyer Program may still register as trade visitors. However, formal hosted-buyer appointments and benefits are separate and subject to approval, so prospective attendees should confirm their registration category and access conditions before arranging travel.

For advisers with meaningful Vietnam, Mekong, luxury, MICE, FIT, group or special-interest business, ITE HCMC 2026 offers a credible opportunity to discover suppliers, strengthen commercial relationships and improve destination knowledge.

That is ultimately the proper test of any trade show: not how many brochures you carry home, but how much better informed and better connected you are when the suitcase is unpacked.
