Bookings are now open for Zuiderdam’s first European season after its major refit. In 2028, Holland America Line will send the renewed ship from Mediterranean sunshine to Norway’s fjords, Iceland’s ports and Greenland’s wild coast.
The Vista Class ship will return to service on 2 April 2028. It will be the second vessel to receive the Holland America Evolution upgrade. The broad program will add popular Pinnacle Class features to six older ships, while keeping the smaller scale that many loyal guests prefer.
Holland America says the fleetwide investment is worth more than US$500 million. It has not disclosed a separate price for the Zuiderdam work. The investment covers four Vista Class ships Oosterdam, Zuiderdam, Westerdam and Noordam plus the Signature Class ships Nieuw Amsterdam and Eurodam.
That point matters. This is not just new carpet, fresh paint and a ribbon near the gangway. Zuiderdam is being recast as a more modern cruise product. New cabin types, updated public rooms and a stronger Dutch flavour are all part of the plan.
The ship’s first new European program starts with two seven-night, one-way Mediterranean cruises. The first leaves Civitavecchia, the port for Rome, on 2 April 2028 and ends in Barcelona. It visits Livorno, Portofino, Marseille and Gibraltar.

A second voyage leaves Barcelona on 9 April for Lisbon. Calls include Valencia, Alicante, Málaga, Tangier, and Cádiz.
From Lisbon, Zuiderdam turns north on a 13-day Atlantic Europe cruise to Amsterdam. The route links Portugal, Spain and France with Ireland, Britain and the Netherlands. Calls provide access to Porto, A Coruña, Bilbao, Bordeaux, La Rochelle, Paris, London, Cork and Dublin.
It is the sort of itinerary that crosses several holiday brochures before lunch.
Once in Amsterdam, Zuiderdam will spend much of the northern summer on routes to Norway, the British Isles, and Iceland. The move is neat in both sales and heritage terms. A Holland America ship will return to the Netherlands after its refit, then follow some of Europe’s oldest sea lanes.
“There is something especially fitting about introducing a newly transformed Zuiderdam in Europe, a region we know exceptionally well and one that has been part of our story from the very beginning,” said Beth Bodensteiner, president of Holland America Line.

After homeporting in the Netherlands, our historic home, Zuiderdam continues on to Iceland and Greenland, tracing routes sailed by generations of explorers and mariners. It’s a collection of voyages that celebrates our heritage and the next chapter of this ship.”
The onboard work will be a key part of the sales pitch. Holland America has confirmed that 32 Solo Verandahs have been built for guests travelling alone. It will also add two forward-facing Bridgeview Suites and 14 Vista Suites. A Pinnacle Suite will be redesigned, and cabins across the ship will be refreshed.
The solo cabins are a smart move. The cruise sector has spent years telling solo guests they are welcome. At times, the fare structure has suggested otherwise. Purpose-built solo cabins give agents a more honest product to sell. They also give the guest a private balcony and, with luck, no forced roommate.
Zuiderdam will also gain the Grand Dutch Café. The venue is already popular on Holland America’s Pinnacle Class ships. It draws on the café culture of Amsterdam and Northern Europe. Holland America says Zuiderdam’s version will be the largest Grand Dutch Café in the Evolution program.
More features will be named in coming months. That gives the line more news to feed into the long sales cycle before the ship returns in 2028.
Norway Takes Centre Stage
The Northern Europe program includes a run of seven-night Norwegian fjord cruises from Amsterdam between April and August. Ports will vary by date. They include Bergen, Oslo, Eidfjord, Haugesund, Ålesund, Skjolden and Nordfjordeid.
Scenic sailing will feature Sognefjord, Nordfjord and Hardangerfjord. These are not the sort of waterways one hurries through. They demand a clear morning, a warm coat and sufficient time at the rail.
Longer choices include a 10-day Norwegian Fjords & Landscapes cruise on 10 June 2028. It calls at Nordfjordeid, Skjolden, Trondheim, Eidfjord, Bergen, and Ålesund.
An 11-day Wild British Isles sailing follows on 20 June. Its ports include Belfast, Galway, Killybegs, Stornoway, Kirkwall, Edinburgh, Liverpool and Cork.
Iceland Earns More Than a Passing Wave
Iceland gets far more than a passing wave from the deck. Seven-day cruises between Amsterdam and Reykjavík leave on 20 May and 1 July. Return voyages depart Reykjavík on 27 May and 8 July.
Based on the sailing, guests may also visit the Shetland and Faroe islands. Icelandic calls include Akureyri, Ísafjörður, Seyðisfjörður, Grundarfjörður and Heimaey.
The season’s main event leaves Amsterdam on 12 August 2028. The 21-day Cultural Crossing with Icelandic Fjords & Greenland sails to Boston. It travels through Iceland, Greenland, Atlantic Canada and New England.
Planned calls include Norðfjörður, Djúpivogur, Grundarfjörður, Ísafjörður, Akureyri, Seyðisfjörður, Reykjavík, Qaqortoq and Nanortalik.
A Broad Brief for Travel Advisors
For travel agents, the strength of this release is its range. One renewed ship can be sold across several types of European holiday. There is Mediterranean culture, Atlantic city touring, Norwegian scenery, British and Irish history, Icelandic nature and a longer ocean crossing.
That allows agents to match the ship to the client. It is a better method than trying to force the client into the ship.
The program also shows Holland America’s wider plan. The line wants to keep its old strengths, such as longer cruises, deeper port programs, mid-sized ships and a long sea-going history. At the same time, it is updating cabins, public rooms and dining for today’s guests.
There is no need to throw the ship’s past overboard simply to install a better suite.

Zuiderdam’s 2028 European season is more than a return to service. It shows how a heritage cruise line can move ahead without losing the family silver or, more importantly, the map.
