A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Willemstad is the capital of Curaçao, an intriguing little city in an interesting little country and one that merits more attention as a destination with attractions beyond its stunning beaches. Also meriting more attention is BOHO Bohemian Boutique Hotel, a small hotel with 21 bright rooms that combines a convenient location with spacious accommodation and stylish decor evocative of its Caribbean culture.
Located in Willemstad’s very hip Pietermaai district, BOHO Bohemian welcomes its guests to an establishment for independent travellers who like privacy in a low-key setting. Behind one of the many colourful historical façades found across the city, BOHO Bohemian has the air of a residential apartment building where all the residents are happy travellers.

Given Curaçao’s close association with the Netherlands, most guests are Dutch fleeing the grey clouds of northern Europe—or, this year, the unprecedented heatwave that makes a Caribbean island a cooler alternative. Some stay for extended periods, so much at home are they, which comes as no surprise when considering BOHO Bohemian’s easy access to Willemstad’s daytime attractions and nighttime activities. An array of room configurations is available in the small hotel, ranging from Comfort rooms to the special Loft room with a private rooftop deck. Comfort rooms at the front of the hotel have private balconies—great for stepping out to admire the vividly painted buildings across the way.
Although there is no restaurant on the premises, breakfast for guests at BOHO Bohemian is served in the lovely courtyard of the hotel’s sister property, ‘t Klooster, just a couple of minutes’ walk away, where a swimming pool is also available to BOHO guests. For lunches and dinners, there is a wide variety of bars and restaurants in this part of town. Two doors down is Kome (koh-meh), one of Curaçao’s most popular restaurants, where innovative food and drinks are prepared with thoughtfulness and served with friendly attention in a stylish environment.

One of the better-connected islands in the Caribbean, Curaçao can be reached on nonstop flights from several US cities as well as Amsterdam. There are also intraregional flights from several islands to Curaçao’s Hato International Airport (CUR) for those travellers venturing around the region. Not that it is necessary to visit another island to experience the quintessence of the Caribbean; from food and drinks to cultural celebrations, with beautiful beaches, flamingos, and the underwater world of diverse marine life thrown in as bonuses, Curaçao has it all.
