ROKI Collection Queenstown and its signature restaurant Essence have been recognised in the Michelin Guide, marking a major milestone for ROKI, which opened in Queenstown in September 2025.

The recognition comes as Michelin officially expands into Aotearoa New Zealand for the first time, marking the guide’s debut in Oceania. The inaugural Michelin Guide New Zealand edition spans Queenstown, Christchurch, Auckland and Wellington, placing New Zealand firmly on the global culinary stage.

Led by Paul Froggatt, Director of Culinary at ROKI Collection Queenstown, Essence has quickly emerged as one of New Zealand’s most compelling dining experiences, shaped by seasonality, provenance and a strong connection to landscape.

At the Michelin Guide Restaurant Ceremony in Auckland last night (June 30), ROKI was awarded 2 Michelin stars, NZ’s only two-star restaurant…

“Receiving two Michelin stars is the realisation of a lifelong dream and one of the proudest moments of my career,” said Froggatt. “It is a recognition that belongs to every member of our team, our chefs and service team whose passion and commitment make Essence what it is every single day. I am deeply grateful to my family who have been my rock behind me and the whole team at ROKI for giving me the opportunity to bring my vision to life. Together, we have created something that celebrates New Zealand’s incredible produce, its people and its unique sense of place. My hope is that every guest leaves not only having enjoyed an exceptional meal, but with a genuine connection to this remarkable country.”

Stephen McAteer, General Manager of ROKI Collection Queenstown said: “We are incredibly honoured to receive this recognition from Michelin.”

“From the beginning, our vision for ROKI was to create something deeply connected to place, where thoughtful design, gracious service and exceptional cuisine come together in a way that feels distinctly of Queenstown and New Zealand.”

McAteer added: “This recognition reflects the remarkable work of Paul and the entire culinary team. Their commitment to precision, seasonality and authenticity has shaped Essence into a truly memorable dining experience.”

Recognised as Luxury Lodges of New Zealand Chef of the Year 2023/24, Froggatt is regarded as one of New Zealand’s leading culinary talents, known for his refined, produce-led approach and quietly sophisticated style of cooking.

Before joining ROKI Collection Queenstown, Froggatt held senior culinary roles at some of New Zealand’s most celebrated luxury lodges.

At Essence, Froggatt presents a contemporary New Zealand dining narrative shaped by European technique and exceptional local ingredients.

“At Essence, our approach has always been centred around creating a genuine sense of place through food,” said Froggatt. “New Zealand has extraordinary ingredients and an incredible natural rhythm. We simply try to honour that in a thoughtful and understated way.”

Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the Michelin Guide, said of the New Zealand launch: “We are thrilled to bring the Michelin Guide to Aotearoa New Zealand for the very first time. The country offers a rich and diverse culinary landscape, shaped by its indigenous Māori heritage, Pacific influences, and a new generation of chefs who champion local produce with creativity and passion.”

Tourism New Zealand Chief Executive René de Monchy added: “We couldn’t be prouder of our vibrant food and beverage scene, and it’s thrilling to see it now shining on the international stage through the prestigious Michelin Guide.”

Designed by Sumich Chaplin Architects with interiors by acclaimed New Zealand designer Virginia Fisher, ROKI Collection Queenstown is located on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and offers 15 expansive suites, distinctive dining experiences and the ROKI Pure wellness sanctuary.
