The modern travel professional is an agile, tech-enabled operations specialist capable of driving immediate value inside complex corporate, technology, and enterprise environments.
A recent formal strategic submission by the Australian Travel Careers Council (ATCC) to the NSW Department of Education, Training Services via the NSW Industry Training Advisory Body (ITAB) highlighted how the high-pressure environment of global travel management builds a highly transferable layer of technical, operational, and risk-mitigation expertise. This submission directly addressed the current government focus on creating agile vocational frameworks that support cross-sector workforce mobility.
The profound adaptability and people resilience of this workforce was pressure-tested during the COVID-19 pandemic. When global travel was faced with unprecedented disruption, thousands of travel professionals successfully pivoted into enterprise risk management, corporate operations, IT deployment, and high-value client relationship roles. Crucially, their advanced counselling expertise and acute emotional intelligence under pressure have made them highly sought-after candidates for strategic corporate HR and people-and-culture roles, where managing human capital through volatility is essential. They succeeded by deploying a specific, advanced competency set native to the travel industry.
This adaptability was structurally mapped out across the core transferable competencies of the travel industry into seven strategic pillars, ensuring broad application in other commercial, economic, and technical activities:
- Digital Literacy & Tech Resilience: Mastery of high-density legacy inventory databases (Amadeus, Sabre), CRM data security, and emerging automated and AI-enabled servicing platforms.
- Problem Solving & Risk Management: Real-time engineering of alternative logistics using fluctuating global data streams to bypass geopolitical and operational delays.
- Commercial & Operational Acumen: Managing vendor service level agreements (SLAs), auditing corporate policy compliance, and evaluating margins and dynamic pricing models.
- Communication Excellence: Simplifying complex international regulatory frameworks for stakeholders and communicating securely via encrypted corporate channels.
- Customer Engagement: High-stakes de-escalation of stressed travellers and utilizing data trends for anticipatory logistics planning.
- People Management & Leadership: Coordinating vast operational ecosystems (airlines, hotels, regulatory bodies) and mentoring teams through complex security protocols.
- Cultural Awareness & Inclusion: Navigating international business customs and legal structures while managing diverse global accessibility requirements.
Commenting on this shift, ATCC CEO Rick Myatt, who has recently been appointed to the prestigious judging panel for the NSW Business Awards 2026, stated:
“Our mission has always been to inspire and guide professionals into rewarding careers, but the modern market demands that we look at qualifications through a cross-sector lens. Travel professionals are uniquely equipped with deep structural competencies, exceptional crisis-counselling capabilities, and the emotional intelligence required to lead teams through high-stakes environments—making them an invaluable asset to corporate HR and digital sectors alike. My upcoming role on the judging panel for the NSW Business Awards 2026 continually reinforces what I see across the market: the businesses that thrive are those that source adaptable, emotionally intelligent, and resilient talent. ATCC is committed to collaborating with government bodies and corporate partners to ensure these high-value, transferable skills are fully recognised and integrated into the broader workforce ecosystem.”
