River cruising’s obsession with “small is beautiful” has just been handed a rather elegant challenge.

Luxury river cruise line AmaWaterways has unveiled the first details of AmaRudi, a vessel destined to become one of Europe’s largest river cruise ships when she begins sailing the Danube in early 2027. And if her predecessor, the much-lauded AmaMagna, is anything to go by, the industry had better make room at the quay.

The announcement marks more than just another ship launch. It signals a bold vote of confidence in the future of river cruising at a time when travellers are increasingly swapping ocean liners for Europe’s storied waterways in search of deeper experiences, greater comfort and, perhaps most importantly, a little more elbow room.

Designed to accommodate just 196 guests across 98 staterooms and suites, AmaRudi will mirror the double-width concept that made sister ship AmaMagna one of the most talked-about vessels in river cruising following her debut in 2019.

In an industry where space is often measured in centimetres, AmaWaterways appears determined to continue rewriting the rulebook.

And then there’s the name.

For the first time in the company’s history, a ship will be named after a co-founder and industry pioneer, Rudi Schreiner. For anyone who knows river cruising, that name needs little introduction. Often referred to as the “Godfather of River Cruising”, Schreiner grew up near Austria’s Danube River and spent much of his childhood exploring the very waterway his namesake vessel will soon call home.

“AmaMagna changed what travellers believed was possible on a river cruise ship,” said Rudi Schreiner, co-founder and Chairman of AmaWaterways.

“We knew there would be a right time to revisit that concept, and with river cruising continuing to grow, that time is now. More travellers are transitioning from ocean to river cruising, and many are seeking a sense of space and choice.

“AmaMagna was one of the most rewarding projects of my career, so having this new ship carry my name makes it especially meaningful. I see it as part of the legacy we have built together over more than two decades of river cruising.”

The ship’s design draws inspiration from the cities, cultures and grand architecture lining the Danube, blending contemporary luxury with subtle historical references.

Translation? Expect European elegance without feeling as though you’ve wandered into a floating museum.

Food, naturally, takes centre stage.

AmaRudi will feature multiple dining venues, including the signature Journey’s Restaurant and the specialty restaurant The Chef’s Table. Guests can also enjoy al fresco dining, a new Italian lunch offering and the intimate Rudi’s Wine Bar, a venue inspired by Schreiner’s passion for wine and European culture.

A built-in Deck Club barbecue on the Sun Deck adds another layer to the culinary experience because, apparently, cruising past medieval castles while enjoying a barbecue wasn’t previously on everyone’s bucket list, but perhaps it should have been.

The line’s inclusive dining philosophy will continue, with complimentary beer, soft drinks and a curated selection of more than 30 wines served during lunch and dinner.

Wellness remains another cornerstone of the AmaWaterways experience.

The expansive wellness complex aboard AmaRudi will include massage treatment rooms, beauty services, a state-of-the-art fitness centre and dedicated relaxation spaces. Guided by onboard Wellness Hosts, guests can participate in fitness classes and shore-based wellness activities throughout their journey.

Then comes perhaps the most surprising addition: a full-sized pickleball court on the Sun Deck.

Because no modern luxury travel product, it seems, can officially launch without mentioning pickleball.

Entertainment is also receiving a significant refresh. AmaRudi will debut a brand-new social entertainment venue featuring cinema screenings, karaoke, billiards and a jukebox. Importantly, thoughtful soundproofing has been incorporated throughout the design, ensuring guests seeking tranquillity won’t have to compete with an enthusiastic rendition of Sweet Caroline drifting down the corridor.

Sustainability has also been firmly embedded into the vessel’s DNA.

AmaRudi will operate with advanced Stage V engines and feature solar panels, shore power connectivity, spud pole technology and lightweight construction materials designed to improve fuel efficiency and reduce environmental impact while navigating Europe’s waterways. The company has continued investing in sustainability initiatives across its fleet as part of its broader environmental strategy.

AmaWaterways has steadily expanded its global footprint and fleet in response to that demand, with new vessels and destinations continuing to emerge across Europe, Asia, Africa and South America.
