Autumn in Australia means one thing above all else: wine country in its glory. The vines are changing colour, the harvest is in, and the cellar doors are throwing open their gates.
But with an abundance of wine regions to visit, it can be hard to know where to go.
To help travellers make the most of the season, The Meat & Wine Co, one of Australia’s leading premium steakhouse groups and a long-standing curator of the country’s finest wines, has analysed the nation’s top wine regions against a weighted index of autumn travel metrics.
The verdict: South Australia’s Barossa Valley is Australia’s number one wine destination for autumn.
“Autumn is one of the most rewarding times to explore Australia’s wine regions,” said Joseph Moussa, National Beverage Manager and Wine Expert at The Meat & Wine Co. “With milder temperatures and changing landscapes, travellers can slow down and experience wine tours at their best, wandering through vineyards, visiting cellar doors, and connecting with the winemakers behind each bottle.”

South Australia leads Australia’s top autumn wine travel destinations
South Australia dominates the rankings for the best wine regions to visit this autumn, securing six spots in the top 10 with Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Adelaide Hills, Clare Valley, Eden Valley and Coonawarra all featuring prominently.
Barossa Valley earns top ranking by a significant margin, scoring 91.72. Its combination of 100 bookable wine tours, 2,136 Decanter award recognitions, and easy 45km access from Adelaide makes it the most complete autumn wine destination in the country.
Its high score is further cemented by some of Australia’s most iconic producers, including Torbreck, Penfolds’ Barossa operations, and a string of boutique makers whose wines regularly appear on The Meat & Wine Co’s curated wine list.
McLaren Vale claims third place with a score of 76.77, offering 66 wine tours and sitting just 33km south of Adelaide. Its mild autumn temperatures and Mediterranean-influenced Shiraz make it ideal for leisurely cellar-door exploration, while its proximity to the coast adds a dimension that few other regions can match.
Adelaide Hills (4th, 66.92) is prized for its cool-climate elegance – Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are the standouts, while Clare Valley (5th, 53.77) offers a quieter, more boutique experience 125km north of Adelaide, renowned for world-class Riesling.

Margaret River ranks in second place, offering a coastal autumn escape despite its distance.
Western Australia’s Margaret River ranks second overall with a score of 77.26, firmly establishing itself as the country’s top destination for travellers who want to build a dedicated autumn trip around wine.
Approximately 229km south of Perth, the region’s distance from the capital is offset by a remarkable concentration of quality: 43 bookable wine tours, 1,797 Decanter award wins, and comfortable autumn temperatures averaging 21.9°C. Its coastal setting and world-class Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay make it a destination in its own right rather than simply a day trip.
East coast regions offer accessibility and variety for autumn getaways.
Victoria’s Yarra Valley ranks sixth overall, combining 67 available wine tours with a location just 49.5km from Melbourne’s CBD. Its cooler growing climate and reputation for elegant Pinot Noir make it a natural first choice for city dwellers seeking a same-weekend escape.
New South Wales’ Hunter Valley ranks eighth, offering 30-plus wine tours within 162km of Sydney. Autumn temperatures averaging 22°C make it a warm, sunshine-filled vineyard destination well into May, and its Semillon, unique to the region, is reason alone to make the trip.
Rutherglen, in Victoria’s north-east, rounds out the top ten at rank nine. Celebrated for its singular fortified wines and an unhurried pace that suits the season perfectly, it offers an autumn experience unlike anywhere else in the country.
