Generation Z isn’t just reshaping the future of travel; they’re already living it. With their always-on smartphones, fast swipe reflexes and demand for hyper-personalised experiences, Gen Z is turning every stage of the travel journey into a digital touchpoint. That includes the payment experience, a significant factor in booking decisions and brand loyalty.
Payments are part of the journey for this cohort, not a separate step. According to PXP’s exclusive research, over 80% of Gen Z book travel using a smartphone, and 69% are inspired by social media when deciding where to go. They expect the payment experience to feel as intuitive and tailored as the app or platform they use. Whether booking a flight via an aggregator app, paying for a hostel on the go, or buying experiences abroad, Gen Z expects frictionless checkouts and instant gratification.
But expectations go far beyond the basics. They want seamless in-app payments, real-time foreign exchange, digital wallet compatibility, and local payment method availability. From Klarna to PayPal, UPI to BLIK, they expect you to meet them where they are, using the methods they use most.
The connected traveller demands seamless, borderless payment experiences.
Multi-currency support is no longer optional. It’s a baseline expectation for global travellers. Gen Z want to know what they’re paying, in their local currency, with no hidden FX charges. Transparent pricing and real-time conversion rates drive trust, and trust drives conversion.
They also travel in packs. Whether it’s gap-year adventures or group city breaks, Gen Z travellers often book together and split costs. That means P2P payments, instant bill splitting and shared receipts are crucial. Apps that don’t support these features risk being seen as outdated or out of touch.
Security is a given, but interruptions are not. Gen Z expects biometric authentication, tokenised one-click checkouts, and invisible fraud prevention tools that protect them without disrupting the flow. Payment interruptions are one of the top reasons for booking abandonment, and Gen Z doesn’t easily forgive friction.
Personalisation, social influence, and mobile dominance.
As more Gen Z travellers get inspired by TikTok, Instagram and influencers for their travel decisions, the line between inspiration and action continues to blur. Brands that fail to capitalise on these social media moments and create immediate purchasing pathways leave money on the table.
Loyalty must be earned, not assumed. Gen Z values instant gratification and relevance. Static loyalty points don’t excite them, but dynamic, gamified rewards and loyalty integrated directly into the checkout do. Brands that underestimate the power of allegiance will lose out to those who make it a seamless payment experience.
Environmental consciousness also plays a role. Gen Z is highly attuned to sustainability. Offering carbon offsetting, donating proceeds to eco causes, or presenting greener travel options at checkout builds emotional connection and brand loyalty.
The opportunity is immense for payments and travel professionals. Gen Z has significant disposable income globally, and their preferences will shape the next wave of payments innovation. Businesses that understand their habits and tailor checkout flows accordingly will unlock loyalty, lifetime value, and cross-border growth.
