In a cheeky masterstroke of marketing and midnight mischief, Virgin Australia and Visit Victoria have teamed up to deliver what may become the most fun you’ll ever have on a school night.

Introducing the Last Flight Club – a daring, one-night-only airborne escapade on Thursday 7 August, whisking weary Sydneysiders off to Melbourne for an after-hours adventure they won’t soon forget… all before they’re back home in time for breakfast.

It sounds like a fever dream cooked up by a PR intern who mixed espresso martinis with Red Bull. Possibly. But it’s real – and it’s glorious.

The whole shebang begins with the final Virgin Australia flight from Sydney to Melbourne, which is transformed into something between a high-flying happy hour and a glamorous prelude to Melbourne’s famously vibrant nightlife. Upon landing, guests are greeted not with sleepy hotel check-ins but with a private DJ set by Client Liaison in the swanky surrounds of the Virgin Australia Lounge. Frankly, the welcome makes your average red-eye look like a commuter train.

From there, travellers are swept through Melbourne’s electric late-night circuit – think iconic laneway bars, street culture, sport, and surprise stops designed to showcase the city’s nocturnal soul.

Last Flight Club is about showing what’s possible when you turn a regular flight into something extraordinary,” said Virgin Australia’s Chief Marketing Officer, Libby Minogue. “With Virgin Australia, it’s not just about the destination – it’s about how we help travellers create memorable moments along the way.”

Hear, hear. And if this is the beginning of Virgin’s new mission to reinvent travel for the better-rested and better-dressed among us, sign us up – ideally with carry-on only.

Visit Victoria, meanwhile, is understandably thrilled to flaunt its capital city’s moonlit credentials. As CEO, Brendan McClements put it, “While other cities wind down, we’re just getting started – with a mix of culture, sport and hospitality that’s unmatched across the country.

He’s not wrong. Melbourne has long held the title of Australia’s after-dark darling, and now it’s got the stats to prove it. 39% of Aussies say it’s the best city for late-night experiences, rising to 46% among the well-heeled. And with its moody cocktail bars, subterranean jazz haunts, and night owl art galleries, who could argue?

But Last Flight Club isn’t just a pop-up party in the sky – it’s a teaser of future events. Virgin Australia is hinting at more bold, imaginative travel offerings ahead. Could this be the start of an entirely new playbook for modern travel? A world where red eyes are for revelry and travel time becomes party time?

Whatever the case, this campaign puts two things in the spotlight: Virgin’s flair for surprise and Melbourne’s refusal to ever go quietly into the night.

To join the Last Flight Club, and yes – places are limited – visit Virgin Australia’s official page before this once-in-a-lifetime trip vanishes into the twilight.

Pack your dancing shoes, charge your phone, and leave your bedtime stories at home – the Last Flight Club is boarding soon.
