It’s not every day you find a global stand-up sensation swapping the Hollywood limelight for incense smoke and roast goose—but that’s precisely what happened when Jimmy O. Yang touched down in his hometown, Hong Kong.
Best known for stealing scenes in Crazy Rich Asians, cracking wise in Silicon Valley, and skewering modern life with his stand-up wit, Jimmy recently returned not just to perform, but to rediscover the Hong Kong he once called home—temples, tea-smoked pork and all.
And let me tell you, it was no leisurely Sunday stroll.
Where Temples Meet Textbooks
The day began in the quietly spiritual heart of the city—Sheung Wan’s historic Man Mo Temple. Built in 1847 and stubbornly refusing to let modernity elbow it aside, the temple remains a proud relic of Hong Kong’s deeply layered past. Here, Jimmy did more than pose for a few photos.

With the reverence of a man reconnecting with his roots—and the comic timing of someone who knows the power of good luck—Jimmy gently tapped the Writing Brush of Man Cheong, the ancient God of Literature, before gripping the sword of the revered warrior-turned-deity Guan Di. Then came a moment of heartfelt superstition: applying gold foil to the temple’s golden deer statue, believed to grant wishes.
“People think Hong Kong is just skyscrapers and shopping,” Jimmy quipped. “But it’s also temples, quiet corners and legends that go back centuries—plus, the gods here have better branding than most influencers.”
High Above the Green
Next stop? Ngong Ping 360—where cable cars swing high above Lantau Island’s velvet-green slopes like something from a Studio Ghibli film.
Jimmy boarded the Crystal+ cable car—complete with glass floors, just in case you weren’t already lightheaded—and was greeted with custom decals honouring his homecoming. Floating above mountains and sea, the serenity was a far cry from LA’s freeways.

After a stroll through Ngong Ping Village, he took the 268 steps up to the Tian Tan Buddha, or “Big Buddha” if you’re not trying to impress. Jimmy took in the vista from the top—verdant hills cradling a city forever in motion.
“In LA, nature is something you drive past on your way to brunch,” he joked. “Here, it’s five minutes from a Michelin-starred dumpling.”
A Lunch Worth a Layover
A Hong Kong homecoming without barbecue pork is like visiting Rome and skipping the pasta. Jimmy dived in with gusto at a neighbourhood favourite that pulled no punches regarding flavour.
On the menu? Melt-in-the-mouth pork belly, glistening pork jowl char siu, Maotai soy sauce chicken, and roast goose so crisp it could be used as legal tender. This wasn’t haute cuisine—it was heart cuisine.

In true Hong Kong style, it was washed down not with beer but with a meticulously crafted cocktail from Asia’s best bar (the name is undisclosed, but if you know, you know).
With notes of yuzu and hints of smoke, the drink came garnished with—wait for it—smoky olives. As far as garnishes go, it beat the pants off a sad sprig of mint.
“Every bite, every sip—it’s like tasting a memory,” Jimmy reflected. “Food here doesn’t just fill you up. It tells a story.”
Nightfall & Neon
Jimmy embraced the rhythm of his hometown’s fabled nightlife as the sun dipped below the skyline and neon signs flickered to life. The pace quickened, the lights dazzled, and the city again became that heady, contradictory blend of ancient and electric.
“This city doesn’t slow down,” Jimmy said. “It just changes gear.”

That sentiment sums up the Hong Kong experience to a tee. A single day offers centuries of culture, stunning landscapes, unforgettable food, and perhaps, if you’re lucky, a few laughs with a homegrown comedian who made it big.
