ATIA - LogoThe Australian Travel Industry Association (ATIA) has announced the passing of Ossie Pitts AM RD, a trailblazing leader and life member of the organization. Renowned for his unwavering dedication to the travel industry, his transformative leadership marks Ossie’s legacy, advocacy for professionalism and integrity, and enduring contributions to consumer protection. Ossie Pitts passed away peacefully on January 10, 2025, at the remarkable age of 101.

A Legacy of Leadership and Vision

Ossie Pitts’ influence on the travel industry spans decades of unparalleled service and commitment. He served on the ATIA Board for an impressive 13 years, including two terms as President from 1969 to 1971 and 1984 to 1986. His leadership extended beyond Australia, representing ATIA on the board of the United Federation of Travel Agents Associations (UFTAA) for eight years, during which he served as President on two separate occasions.

In 1987, Ossie became the Chair of the newly established Travel Compensation Fund, a government body designed to oversee and protect the interests of 3,500 travel agents nationwide. His efforts to strengthen consumer trust and ensure the industry’s stability remain a cornerstone of his legacy.

Ossie was awarded the Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his remarkable contributions in 1988—a prestigious honour recognizing his transformative impact on the Australian travel industry.

A Distinguished Career Spanning Land, Sea, and Air

Ossie Pitts’ illustrious career began at sea before transitioning into the travel sector in 1956 when he joined Butler Air Transport, a business later acquired by Reg Ansett in 1968. He went on to establish Mercury Travel and worked across multiple travel agencies, ultimately concluding his professional journey at Travels World in Crows Nest, Sydney. Ossie retired at age 85, having dedicated nearly six decades to advancing the travel industry.

Christian Hunter, Chair of ATIA, paid tribute to Ossie Pitts, stating:

“Ossie Pitts was a visionary leader whose contributions to travel nationally and internationally were both transformational and enduring. His tireless dedication to ensuring professionalism, integrity, and consumer protection continues to resonate within the Australian travel industry today.
