In a groundbreaking development for the Australian hospitality industry, Perth has emerged as the nation’s leader in hotel occupancy rates for 2024. According to newly released data from the Australian Hotels Association (WA) [AHA(WA)], the Western Australian capital achieved an extraordinary average occupancy rate of 79.4% from January to December—the highest in the country.
This remarkable achievement underscores the resilience and growth of Western Australia’s tourism and hospitality sectors, which have benefited from strategic investments and robust government initiatives.
Strategic Investments Drive Growth
Bradley Woods, CEO of AHA(WA), attributes this success to a combination of factors, including expanded aviation routes, a diverse calendar of significant events, and the resurgence of corporate travel.
“A diversified schedule of events and aviation routes has been pivotal in positioning Western Australia as a global destination. This influx of visitors translates directly into higher hotel occupancy and increased spending across the hospitality sector,” said Mr Woods.
With the WA Government prioritizing tourism infrastructure, including the expansion of the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre, Perth has solidified its status as a preferred destination for both leisure and business travellers.
By the Numbers: A Record-Breaking Year
The data highlights significant milestones:
- Perth’s Metropolitan Hotels: Achieved an average daily room rate of $227.31, reflecting a 3.2% increase from 2023.
- Regional Growth: The Kimberley and Pilbara regions experienced a 13.5% rise in occupancy, while Bunbury and Mandurah saw a 10% increase.
- Nation-Leading Occupancy: A 3.9% year-over-year growth underscores Perth’s national leadership in hospitality performance.
These statistics reveal not only the strong demand for accommodations but also the ability of hotels to command premium rates, reinforcing Perth’s growing appeal as a travel hotspot.
Economic Ripple Effects
The surge in visitation has had far-reaching economic benefits. Hospitality venues, including pubs, bars, and restaurants, have seen increased patronage, while local tourism operators have enjoyed a surge in bookings. According to Mr. Woods, this growth supports thousands of jobs and bolsters the state’s economy.
“Western Australia’s vibrant tourism and hospitality sectors are not only driving economic growth but are also enhancing the quality of life for residents by creating a thriving community,” he stated.
The Road Ahead
The AHA(WA) is committed to advocating for sustained investment in tourism initiatives. From infrastructure enhancements to marketing campaigns targeting international audiences, the goal is clear: maintain Western Australia’s momentum as a premier global destination.
“The WA Government’s continued focus on attracting events and boosting corporate travel will lay the foundation for long-term success,” said Mr Woods. “We’re excited about what lies ahead for Perth and Western Australia as a whole.”
