National tourism agency VisitBritain is spearheading an ambitious initiative to spotlight the UK’s tourism treasures, hosting more than 120 international travel trade representatives for exclusive educational visits nationwide. This grand event, part of the flagship ‘Showcase Britain’ mission, coincides with the launch of VisitBritain’s global screen tourism campaign, ‘Starring GREAT Britain.’
Shining a Spotlight on Film-Inspired Tourism
This groundbreaking campaign highlights the UK’s starring role in blockbuster films and TV productions. Participating travel buyers and media will experience firsthand the real-world destinations behind iconic on-screen moments, from the rolling landscapes of England to the rugged coastlines of Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. These immersive experiences aim to position the UK as a leading travel destination, leveraging its cultural appeal to inspire itineraries for global tourists.
A Global Reach Across 17 Markets
The event welcomes travel professionals from 17 key international markets, including the USA—the UK’s largest inbound visitor source—along with Australia, China, India, and European countries like Germany, France, and Italy. This diverse delegation underscores the global demand for British travel experiences and the potential to drive significant growth in the UK’s £74 billion tourism sector.
Boosting Regional Economies
Tourism Minister Sir Chris Bryant emphasized the transformative potential of this initiative:
“Thanks to our stunning scenery, heritage, and world-class screen industries, many unforgettable moments that have captivated audiences on-screen were filmed here in the UK. Events like ‘Showcase Britain’ will attract more visitors to explore these destinations, fueling growth in our tourism industry and local economies.”
Sir Chris also highlighted the government’s ambitious ‘Plan for Change,’ which aims to welcome 50 million international visitors annually by 2030, creating new opportunities in communities nationwide.
VisitBritain’s Vision for Growth
Patricia Yates, CEO of VisitBritain, echoed this sentiment:
“With the launch of our ‘Starring GREAT Britain’ campaign, now is the perfect time to showcase our vibrant cities, world-class attractions, and stunning countryside. By enhancing destination knowledge for travel buyers, we encourage extended itineraries that channel visitor spending into regional economies. This initiative will leave attendees inspired to promote Britain as the ultimate travel destination.”
Tailored Itineraries for Unique Experiences
VisitBritain has collaborated with Tourism Northern Ireland, VisitScotland, VisitEngland, and Visit Wales to craft bespoke itineraries for each participating market. These three-to-five-day educational tours aim to equip travel professionals with in-depth knowledge of the UK’s diverse offerings, from heritage sites and cultural landmarks to cutting-edge contemporary experiences.
Prestigious Networking and Business Opportunities
The ‘Showcase Britain’ initiative starts with an exclusive networking event at Hampton Court Palace in Surrey on January 23, 2024. Tourism Minister Sir Chris Bryant will officially welcome delegates, VisitBritain Chairman Nick de Bois CBE, and Patricia Yates.
On January 24, participants will attend the ‘Britain & Ireland Marketplace’ (BIM) trade event at the Intercontinental London – The O2. This premier gathering provides a full day of business appointments and networking opportunities with tourism suppliers and destination representatives.
Driving Value in UK Tourism
Inbound tourism remains one of the UK’s most valuable service exports, projected to generate £32.5 billion in visitor spending in 2024, with an annual growth rate of 5%. By forging stronger connections between international travel buyers and UK tourism providers, ‘Showcase Britain’ aims to amplify this growth and solidify the UK’s position as a top global destination.
The Real Star of the Show
As buyers embark on tailored tours, they will explore the essence of British culture, from the vibrant energy of cities like London and Edinburgh to the tranquil beauty of the Lake District and Snowdonia. These curated experiences are designed to inspire awe and ensure the UK remains a sought-after destination for international travellers.
Patricia Yates summed up the event’s significance: “From our rich history to our modern hospitality, Britain truly is the star of the show. We’re thrilled to give international buyers an unforgettable experience, ensuring they leave ready to promote the UK as a must-visit destination in 2024 and beyond.”
Looking Ahead
With the eyes of the travel world on the UK, ‘Showcase Britain’ promises to be a pivotal moment in strengthening the nation’s global tourism appeal. Through strategic partnerships, innovative campaigns, and immersive experiences, VisitBritain sets the stage for a thriving visitor economy that benefits communities nationwide.
