Fresh from a victorious Supreme Court battle, artist and Mona’s First Lady Kirsha Kaechele has confirmed that the Ladies Lounge will reopen for a month of celebration. Ladies are invited to experience the lavish space—complete with specially commissioned artworks and performances—from 19 December until mid January at Mona.
Following a lengthy legal process which saw the artwork subject to an anti-discrimination complaint (brought forward by a man), a tribunal ruled that the Ladies Lounge must ‘cease refusing entry to persons who do not identify as ladies’. Kaechele opted to close the Lounge over opening to men. She then appealed to the Supreme Court of Tasmania, who quashed the ruling—a triumph for the Ladies Lounge. In celebration, the indulgent haven will open for a victory lap before moving on from Mona.
Kirsha Kaechele says: ‘Welcome back, ladies. Through the court case, the Ladies Lounge has transcended the art museum and come to life. People from all over the world have been invited to contemplate the experiences of women throughout history and today. It is time to celebrate in the place where it all began—with the dedicated adoration of our butlers and copious amounts of champagne to toast this incredible chapter!’
Ladies visiting Mona during the Lounge’s final month will be beckoned through its green silk curtains to luxuriate in the pure company of women, be waited on by charming butlers, enjoy a glass of bubbles and take respite from the patriarchy. A selection of new artworks will be on display, along with performances by artists including Betty Grumble and a few surprises—and visitors are invited to become part of this living installation.
Men are (still) not permitted, though the opportunity to be of service will be available to a select few, if they queue nicely (digitally, via ballot on Mona’s app, The O).
For anyone wishing to bottle the essence of the Ladies Lounge, Kaechele is also releasing a commemorative, limited edition fragrance: The Verdict, the scent of victory. Created by The Raconteur for the lady who appeals, the fragrance features an elegant bouquet of fine florals, lush green stems, juicy citrus and a hint of spice. It will be available to purchase from the Mona Shop when the Lounge reopens.
Kaechele adds: ‘The physical expression of the Ladies Lounge at Mona is coming to an end, but the Ladies Lounge is a living artwork. It could appear anywhere at any time, especially in centres of male power.’
The Ladies Lounge will be open at Mona from Thursday 19 December 2024 until Monday 13 January 2025. Entry for ladies, and exclusion for men, is included as part of the museum entry ticket.
