HMD Asia - LogoIn a strategic move set to enhance luxury travel experiences across Southeast Asia, KS Hotels and HMD Asia proudly announce the acquisition of two of the region’s most storied hotels—La Résidence Phou Vao in Luang Prabang, Laos, and La Résidence D’Angkor in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Formerly managed by the prestigious Belmond, these iconic properties will now transition to HMD Asia’s expert management, with a renewed focus on cultural immersion, luxurious design, and heritage preservation.

Starting November 1, 2024, La Résidence Phou Vao will officially operate under HMD Asia’s management, offering guests continued access to an elegant hilltop sanctuary within Luang Prabang’s UNESCO World Heritage region. Steeped in history and cultural richness, this serene hotel, perched on “the hill of kites,” reflects the area’s historical significance as the playground of Lao royalty. Guests here are treated to breathtaking views of the Mekong River Valley and the tranquillity of a secluded retreat, making it one of Laos’ premier travel destinations.

Meanwhile, La Résidence D’Angkor, an enchanting riverside property in the heart of Siem Reap, is undergoing a significant renovation and is set to reopen in Q4 2025. Located just moments from the bustling streets and legendary temples of Angkor Wat, La Résidence D’Angkor embodies Cambodian heritage and craftsmanship with lush gardens and traditional architecture. Its guests will experience unparalleled proximity to Siem Reap’s vibrant cultural scene, including boutique shops, cozy cafes, and historical landmarks.

A New Era for La Résidence Hotels with HMD Asia’s Visionary Leadership

HMD Asia, owned by renowned Cambodian entrepreneur Sokoun Chanpreda, brings expertise and a deep respect for Southeast Asia’s rich cultural heritage to these properties. Executive Director Anthony Lark, a highly respected figure in luxury hospitality known for his successful management of iconic resorts like Amanresorts across Southeast Asia and Trisara in Phuket, leads the management team.

Reflecting on the acquisition, Lark stated, “HMD Asia is thrilled to steward these iconic hotels and continue their legacy of refined service and attention to detail. We see this as a profound responsibility and an exciting opportunity to develop unique guest experiences that honor the spirit and beauty of these locations.”

Commitment to Sustainable Luxury and Unique Guest Experiences

Under HMD Asia’s stewardship, both properties will focus on elevating guest experiences through curated activities celebrating each location’s unique traditions, landscapes, and histories. La Résidence Phou Vao, set amidst the rolling hills of Luang Prabang, invites guests to connect with the local culture, from exploring traditional kite-flying sites to engaging with local artisans. Meanwhile, La Résidence D’Angkor’s reopening will introduce exclusive access to the wonders of Angkor, paired with immersive experiences like private temple tours and hands-on cultural workshops, catering to luxury travellers seeking more profound connections with their destinations.

The acquisition of these two properties also marks HMD Asia’s commitment to sustainable luxury. The company plans to integrate eco-friendly practices and support local communities. This vision aligns with the growing trend of travellers seeking responsible and meaningful experiences.

Strengthening Southeast Asia’s Position as a Luxury Travel Hub

Adding La Résidence Phou Vao and La Résidence D’Angkor to HMD Asia’s portfolio underscores Southeast Asia’s rising prominence as a premier luxury travel destination. These properties are expected to attract global travellers with discerning tastes who value authentic, heritage-rich experiences. This acquisition further establishes HMD Asia as a formidable player in the hospitality industry, bridging Southeast Asia’s rich past with the future of luxury travel.
