This zero-emission cruise ship is set to redefine the maritime industry with a launch date slated for 2030. Designed to operate entirely emission-free, Sea Zero promises to cut energy consumption by 40-50%, establishing a new benchmark for green travel at sea.
The project, first announced in October 2022, has been under intense research and development in collaboration with Vard, a leading Norwegian maritime design firm. According to Hurtigruten’s CEO, Hedda Felin, “The cruising industry is a significant polluter, and it is crucial that we take major steps to reduce emissions. Our goal is to have an emission-free ship in operation by around 2030.”
Felin highlighted that while the project is still in its developmental stages, substantial progress has already been made. The Sea Zero ship will rely heavily on large battery packs with a capacity of approximately 60 megawatt-hours as its primary energy source. Sails, which can be raised and lowered depending on conditions, will further complement the ship’s energy efficiency.
Harnessing Wind and Sun for a Greener Cruise
One of the ship’s standout features is the introduction of retractable sails. These OceanWings, initially developed in France for cargo vessels, are a significant step forward in utilizing wind power for large-scale maritime transport. “The sails could reduce energy consumption by 10% over time,” says Gerry Larsson-Fedde, Hurtigruten’s Chief Operating Officer. “We’ve made significant strides by shifting to a more mature design already used on cargo ships.”
Solar panels strategically placed on the vessel will complement the sails and contribute an additional 2-3% in energy savings, making Sea Zero a prime example of how renewable energy sources can be harmoniously integrated into the cruise experience.
Advanced Engineering and Energy Efficiency
Sea Zero’s design goes beyond its renewable energy capabilities. The ship will be equipped with contra-rotating propellers for propulsion, significantly improving energy efficiency. Additionally, retractable thrusters ensure optimal port maneuvering, increasing safety and operational flexibility.

Introducing “smart cabins” will allow guests to monitor and control their energy usage. Through a user-friendly app, passengers can adjust heating, ventilation, and lighting, all while receiving real-time data on how much energy they are using.
“We are already testing advanced sensors in these cabins,” Larsson-Fedde explains. “In the near future, we will conduct full-scale tests with guests onboard to refine the system.”
