The Farm Margaret River’s 2024 Artist in Residence is Tasmania based, Lutruwita/Tasmanian Indigenous contemporary artist Cassie Sullivan. Sullivan is using her residency time to explore a multidisciplinary approach to being in conversations with Country.

Over her two-month residency at The Farm, Sullivan has engaged in a diverse range of artistic practices. These include emotive ink drawings with grass tree leaves which have been collected in conversation with (and in care of) the Balga, repetitively building both in-studio and paddock installations, expanding her video practice, and rediscovering her passion for written and photographic journaling.
For two days, The Farm Margaret River is opening its studios to present Cassie Sullivan’s residency work in an Open Studio and Artist Talk event. The Open Studio will take place on Friday 16th of August, 16:30-18:30 and the Artist Talk on the 17th of August at 11:00-13:00 at 343 Burnside Rd, Margaret River.
Cassie Sullivan
Cassie Sullivan is a Lutruwita/Tasmanian Indigenous contemporary artist whose practice spans moving image, photography, writing, sound, installation, and printmaking. She employs a responsive and intimate approach that allows for a sensory engagement with Country.
Sullivan’s current artistic exploration delves into themes of intergenerational experience and trauma, particularly as they manifest in bodily memory. Through her practice she investigates the complex ways in which knowledge from her Indigenous lineage is both carried and lost within her identity and body.
Cassie was recently awarded the Women’s Art Prize Tasmania Lutruwita Award. Her recent commission wayi (to hear) 2023 is currently touring in Between Waves at Casula Powerhouse presented by Australian Center of Contemporary Art (ACCA).

The Farm Margaret River
The Farm Margaret River is a working rural property and home to artist studios dedicated to exploring our connection to land through art.
The Farm comprises several studios and a workshop, providing access to both agricultural farming land and natural bushlands. The property hosts a unique diversity of flora and fauna endemic to the South West of Western Australia. The Farm is situated on the ancestral Country of the Wardandi people, a cultural group of the Noongar nation who have lived on and from the land, the rivers that run through it and the ocean it meets in harmony for tens of thousands of years.
Every year, local, national and international artists and collaborators are invited to The Farm’s ever-changing, ancient piece of land to create site-specific artwork informed by this unique place. Their contributions form part of an ongoing collective inquiry.
Previous recipients include and adorn Chris Booth (NZ), Perdita Phillips (WA), Nathalie Hartog-Gautier (NSW), Holly O’Meehan (WA), Harrison Rieke (WA), Cora Jongsma (NL) and Danae Stratou (GR).
