Global RescueThe 2024 hurricane season began with a dramatic entrance as Storm Alberto, the first named storm of the season, made landfall in the southeastern Gulf of Mexico. Experts predict a record number of hurricanes this year, prompting urgent calls for preparedness and action.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), this season is expected to see between 17 and 25 named storms from June 1 to November 30. This forecast underscores the need for heightened awareness and readiness among residents and travellers in hurricane-prone areas.

Dan Richards, CEO of The Global Rescue Companies, a leading medical, security, evacuation, and travel risk management services provider, emphasizes the importance of utilizing modern weather tracking technology. “Weather tracking technology allows people to track hurricanes well before landfall, giving them ample time to prepare their homes and evacuate, if needed,” said Richards. “Nevertheless, every year, some stay put because they are unwilling or unable to do otherwise.”

Five Essential Hurricane Survival Tips

To help the public prepare for the challenging season ahead, Global Rescue has outlined five crucial survival tips:

  1. Evacuate if You Can: If local officials issue an evacuation order, following their instructions is vital. Ignoring evacuation orders can result in life-threatening situations.
  2. Stay Informed: Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) from the National Weather Service can be received on mobile phones, providing timely and critical information.
  3. Prepare a “Go Bag”: In a sudden evacuation, having a petite backpack ready with essentials such as changing clothes, toiletries, medications, important documents, and some cash in small denominations is crucial. Inform friends and family of your plans to ensure communication.
  4. Know Your Shelter Options: Familiarize yourself with evacuation routes and safe destinations such as airports or inland hotels on high ground. If sheltering in place, choose a small interior room or closet, stay away from windows, and close heavy drapes to protect against shattering glass.
  5. Keep Devices Charged: Power outages can last for days after a hurricane. Multiple backups for charging phones, tablets, or laptops are essential to stay connected with emergency services.

The Dangers of Storm Surge

One of the most severe threats during hurricanes is storm surge, the leading cause of hurricane-related deaths. As powerful winds push ocean water toward the shore, the surge can devastate buildings, erode coastlines, and cause significant inland flooding. Richards warns, “Even if you’re not located directly on the coast, damage from a storm surge can occur more than 100 miles inland. The results can be catastrophic.”

Conclusion: Be Prepared and Stay Safe

With the forecast of an unusually active hurricane season, it’s more important than ever to be prepared and take the necessary precautions. Following the expert advice from Global Rescue can make a significant difference in ensuring safety and minimizing risks.

As Alberto sets the tone for a tumultuous few months, residents and travellers in affected regions should heed these survival tips and stay informed through reliable sources such as the National Weather Service and local authorities.
