In a spectacular fusion of technology and tradition, Tokyo welcomed 2024 with its first-ever “HAPPY NEW YEAR TOKYO” countdown event. Hosted at the iconic Tomin Hiroba, adjacent to the towering Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, the event mesmerized a diverse crowd 650, including children, adults, and international visitors.

The evening’s festivities commenced with a breathtaking projection mapping display, illuminating the plaza with vibrant colours and images that captured Tokyo’s essence – its iconic landmarks and the enchanting transitions of the four seasons. This visual feast set the stage for unforgettable performances and communal celebrations.

Renowned singer-songwriter Pikotaro graced the event, unveiling a unique rendition of his viral hit “PPAP”. His performance, infused with the lyrical motif “YO” for “you” and “TOK”, symbolizing the ticking of time, resonated deeply, echoing the theme of moving forward with Tokyo. Pikotaro’s message, “Let’s move forward along with Tokyo,” perfectly encapsulated the spirit of the evening.

Adding to the excitement, beloved Sanrio characters, led by Hello Kitty, captivated the audience with their adorable stage presence, complemented by the dynamic projection mapping show.

The event reached its emotional zenith with Tokyo’s Governor Koike’s address. She penned the message, “Everyone Shines Your Tokyo,” on a lantern, a symbolic gesture underscoring her sentiment that the allure of Tokyo is a collective creation of its people. As she eloquently put it, “The charm of Tokyo, born anew every day, is created by each and every one of us. This means that when you shine brighter, Tokyo will shine all the more.”

The finale was a mesmerizing blend of technology and tradition. A colourful projection mapping show themed on Tokyo’s seasons cascaded over a large, curved wall, setting the backdrop for the countdown. As the clock struck midnight, participants released lanterns bearing their hopes for the new year into the sky, creating a fantastical spectacle that lit up the night, symbolizing hope and unity.

This inaugural event marked the beginning of a new year and symbolized Tokyo’s relentless spirit of innovation and community. It was a night where technology met tradition, and every individual’s light contributed to the luminosity of Tokyo.
