European self-guided walk operator, On Foot Holidays, has launched a new hiking route in Slovenia which takes hikers through the picturesque valleys and lofty meadows of the Julian Alps to spectacular Lake Bled and its Insta-famous church tower.
The new eight-night walking holiday in Slovenia brings to 33 the number of self-guided hikes UK-based On Foot Holidays offers in 11 countries across Europe.
Available for the first time next summer from May to September, the just-released ‘Slovenian Highlands’ walk is On Foot Holidays’ second hiking route in Slovenia. The journey covers 7-16 km per day and is graded medium-hard in effort.
Curated for independent travellers, the hike sees walkers stay at a series of family-run B&Bs and character-filled inns and hotels, with luggage transferred between the accommodations so hikers can explore unencumbered on foot. Along the way, walkers can recharge with authentic Slovenian cuisine sourced from local produce.
The route starts with two nights in the ski resort of Kranjska Gora with walks to pretty alpine meadows, lakes and waterfalls. Hikers then head to the mountain village of Mojstrana for more rewarding walks through whispering woodlands, dramatic valleys and farmland. Walkers then head to the tiny hamlet of Pod Golico for a hike up to the high ridges lining the border with Austria, with breathtaking views in all directions.
The route ends with two nights in a charming B&B near world-famous Lake Bled and its striking island church with soaring bell tower. Walkers can visit the island church, walk up to a lookout above the lake or explore nearby Vintgar Gorge on foot.
Available from May to September each year, On Foot Holidays’ new Slovenian Highlands walk includes eight nights’ B&B and inn accommodation along the route, daily breakfasts, two picnic lunches, two dinners, a taxi transfer from Ljubljana to the start point at Kranjska Gora, maps, directions and all luggage transfers between hotels along the way – meaning walkers simply carry a day pack each day. The holiday costs from £1175 per person, twin-share (about A$2238 depending on exchange rates).
* If walkers add on another of On Foot Holidays’ walking routes to their European holiday, they can save 10 per cent on the lower-priced hike..
