A cutting-edge project, Elephant Valley is all set to metamorphose the very essence of the Safari Park into a breathtaking savanna. What awaits visitors is an interactive experience that promises a renewed admiration for the grandeur of elephants.

Deep diving into the brilliance of this ambitious endeavour, Elephant Valley isn’t just an upgrade; it’s a paradigm shift. It’s fashioned to catapult guests into the magnificent world of elephants. This captivating journey nurtures empathy and awe for these majestic creatures and kindles a genuine enthusiasm for wildlife.

Paul A. Baribault, the celebrated president and CEO of San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, articulated the aspirations behind this project. He emphasized how Elephant Valley epitomizes the ethos of immersive experiences, forging a bridge between San Diego’s vital efforts and the overarching global endeavours for elephant conservation. Such monumental strides, he underscores, are fueled by the undying support of the community, members, donors, and allies and invaluable collaborations with global partners.

But what can visitors expect? Imagine a surroundings where elephants grace your sights from all directions. Envision a place where you’re treading an overhead bridge and witnessing a herd of elephants majestically moving beneath you. This isn’t just about viewing elephants but understanding their pivotal role as the architects of ecosystems and decoding their intricate social fabrics.

Nestled at the heart of Elephant Valley is a majestic two-story lodge, echoing the charm and allure of African safari stops. Here, guests can marvel at elephants luxuriating in vast watering holes and engage with educators who unravel the magic of the region’s wildlife. It’s an authentic slice of the African grasslands, complete with flora cultivated by a stellar team of horticulturists and arborists. The habitat boasts avant-garde features mirroring the ever-changing rhythms of the African savanna, ensuring the elephants feel right at home all year round.

Highlighting the fragility of elephants’ future, Lisa Peterson, the Executive Director of San Diego Zoo Safari Park, stated that Elephant Valley would be the ultimate portal where one’s innate curiosity blooms into profound discoveries. The park envisions it as a space where generations come face-to-face with nature’s splendour, creating memories that last a lifetime.

The urgency of such an initiative can’t be stressed enough. With threats like climate change, habitat depletion, poaching, and challenges in human-wildlife coexistence, elephants, especially the African savanna species, are treading a fragile path, listed as Endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List.

San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance and its esteemed partners like Save the Elephants, The Nature Conservancy, and many others are committed to conserving these gentle giants. Their collaborative research in Africa and at the zoo is an endeavour to deepen our comprehension of these species and carve out robust conservation strategies.

Nadine Lamberski, the Chief Conservation and Wildlife Health Officer, highlighted the critical challenges elephants face across Africa, emphasizing the paramount need for collaborative and sustainable solutions.

Elephant Valley’s creation has been made possible due to the generosity of myriad donors, notably Denny Sanford, a longstanding supporter of the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. Sanford’s philanthropy is evident in Elephant Valley and endeavours like the Wildlife Explorers Basecamp and the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Explorers TV program.

Eagerly anticipated to reach completion in 2025, Elephant Valley is a testament to the future of wildlife conservation. For more insights and to join this revolution, visit sdzsafaripark.org/elephantvalley.
