With global river cruising projected to triple in size by 2035 and outpace ocean cruise growth (Source: Grand View Research/MRFR, 2025), Trafalgar has revamped its river cruise group policy to give Australian and New Zealand travel agents a sharper competitive edge.

Designed to maximise commercial returns and streamline the booking process, the enhanced policy introduces greater flexibility, lower risk allocation options, and expanded full-ship charter opportunities across Trafalgar’s river portfolio.

“River cruising represents one of the most lucrative growth opportunities in our region,” said Andrew Young, TTC Tour Brands, Senior Vice President of Sales – Oceania. “By offering sophisticated vessels, standout itineraries, and now an even more agent-friendly group policy, we’re making it easier for trade partners to turn group interest into high-margin bookings.”

To accommodate varying stages of client commitment, Trafalgar has simplified group space holds into two clear streams:

  • Soft Allocation (No Financial Commitment): Holds pricing at time of quotation based on cabin category. Space is subject to availability and confirmed upon receipt of a standard AUD/NZD$350 per-person guest deposit.
  • Hard Allocation (Guaranteed Space): A deposit of AUD/NZD$800 per cabin exclusively blocks space. Deposits are fully refundable up to 12 months prior to departure (excludes suites). Unsold cabins are released at the 12-month mark.

“Leading with concrete availability and firm pricing drives significantly higher conversion rates,” added Young. “Soft allocations give agents an immediate, risk-free proposal to present, while hard allocations lock in inventory for groups ready to commit.”

Under the updated policy, group bookings (minimum 8 or 10 guests depending on departure) unlock tailored incentives, including:

  • One FOC twin-share place for every group of 8 or 10 guests.
  • Flexible Savings: A choice between an exclusive AUD/NZD$200 per-person group discount OR the active in-market tactical offer.
  • Bonus Value: Access to exclusive Group Amenity Points.

Trafalgar recommends a 12-to-18-month booking lead time to secure prime cabin allocation and best available pricing.

Expanded Full-Ship Charters

For agents handling high-net-worth groups, corporate incentives, or affinity travel, Trafalgar is also expanding its whole-ship charter offerings.

“A full buyout offers complete exclusivity—from bespoke dining and tailored shore excursions to branded digital itineraries,” said Young. “With net pricing, flexible payment structures, and dedicated support from our local Group Specialists, charters deliver a seamless, high-value solution for milestone celebrations, executive retreats, and special interest, incentive or corporate rewards groups.”
