Malawi’s emergence as one of the most complete tourist destinations in Africa is continuing to gather pace and 2026 looks like it will be another great year for the Warm Heart of Africa. Last year saw plenty of positive developments in the country, and this year promises even more. We’re currently taking a look at achievements from 2025 and plans for 2026 that underpin this upward trajectory. In the first two weeks we took a look at Malawi’s key local tour operators and transport companies and its game parks and safari lodges. This week the focus is the jewel in the country’s crown – Lake Malawi.
Expanding Horizons on Lake Malawi
Lodges along the shores and islands of Lake Malawi continued to strengthen their offerings in 2025, with a clear focus on wellness, sustainability and meaningful community engagement. From luxury lakeshore resorts to eco-lodges rooted in education and conservation, developments this year reflect a growing demand for responsible, experience-led travel. Further expansion and innovation are planned for 2026, reinforcing Lake Malawi’s position as one of Africa’s most distinctive freshwater destinations.
Makokola Retreat, Mangochi Lakeshore
In 2025, The Makokola Retreat enhanced its luxury eco-tourism offering with the expansion of its wellness portfolio, introducing Le-Spa, a signature spa concept inspired by Malawian traditions. The lodge also focused on service excellence and immersive guest experiences, alongside strengthening its digital presence, which contributed to an increase in direct bookings. Community engagement remained a priority, with ongoing support for local schools and programmes on the Mangochi lakeshore.
Looking ahead to 2026, The Makokola Retreat will undertake a major expansion, including the addition of a new wing with 21 luxury family-style suites, a fully renovated swimming pool, and a revamped coffee lounge. Plans also include deeper integration with local communities through curated partnerships and storytelling initiatives, alongside further sustainability measures aimed at reducing environmental impact and enhancing eco-friendly operations
Kaya Mawa, Likoma Island
At Kaya Mawa on Likoma Island, 2025 developments focused on comfort and sustainability. A new cooling breezer technology is being introduced across all premium rooms, offering guests a quieter, more energy-efficient alternative to traditional air-conditioning. In addition, the lodge will introduce an electric dhow (e-Dhow) for water-based activities, representing a significant step forward for low-carbon tourism on Lake Malawi. These innovations underline Kaya Mawa’s long-standing commitment to sustainable luxury and are expected to enhance the guest experience well into 2026.
Blue Zebra Island Lodge, Nankoma Island
Blue Zebra Island Lodge marked key milestones in 2025 with the opening of its new Executive Family Chalet, expanding accommodation options for families and multi-generational travellers. The lodge also improved trade and booking efficiency through the creation of a new factsheet and the transition to a live availability system via ResRequest, streamlining access for tour operators and travel partners.
Butterfly Space, Nkhata Bay
In Nkhata Bay, Butterfly Space Eco Lodge continued to blend hospitality with education and community development throughout 2025. The completion of a boarding hostel at Stepping Stones School significantly improved access to education for children from remote villages, supported by solar power and permaculture gardens. Lodge facilities were also upgraded using locally sourced and upcycled materials, while new co-working spaces attracted digital nomads and long-stay travellers to the lakeshore.
Plans for 2026 include the introduction of a new family self-catering chalet, improved reception facilities, expanded early childhood education support, and the creation of an integrated agroecology learning farm and innovation hub. These initiatives will further strengthen Butterfly Space’s role as a centre for eco-tourism, learning and community empowerment.
Makuzi Beach Lodge, Chintheche
Makuzi Beach Lodge used 2025 to reinforce its position as an eco-focused lodge, introducing spice tours and immersive cooking experiences linked to its surrounding landscape and community. The creation of A Journey Through Spices reflects growing interest in culinary and cultural travel along Lake Malawi.
In 2026, the lodge plans to expand these experiences further, combining spice-farm activities with additional wellness retreats and community engagement initiatives, offering guests a deeper connection to local traditions and sustainable living.
