“History is not just the story of the past; it is the story of the present, and it helps us understand the future.”
They say you understand a city/country better if you know its history. One of the best ways to familiarise yourself with a city is to plan a walking tour of its historic sites and learn about its culture, traditions, history, and architecture. This is a starting point for your explorations. The next step is to secure an experienced and knowledgeable guide, and we found that in Izabella Daszkiewicz. See: GEDANKA – Izabella Daszkiewicz [email protected].
She said, “I enjoy working with people, telling them about culture, traditions, history, and architecture.” So that’s what we did. Izabella kept us spellbound by her stories of the city she clearly loves. Before we left her, she suggested we see several museums and sights in Gdansk, all free with the Gdansk Tourist Card. A package of free admissions to museums and the Zoo and discounts for cultural facilities, entertainment venues and restaurants, tailored specifically for your needs.
- Malbork Castle
- Traditional gothic houses – The Artus Court – Gdansk
However, let’s explore some Historical and Cultural Sites:
- Old Town: Explore the charming streets, admire the colourful buildings, and visit the iconic Neptune’s Fountain and Artus Court.
- St. Mary’s Church: Marvel at the largest brick church in the world.

- Visit Oliwski Park: Relax and enjoy the greenery and tranquillity of this park.
- Explore the Tri-City (Gdynia and Sopot): Take a day trip to the nearby coastal towns of Gdynia and Sopot, known for their beaches and piers.
- Sample local cuisine: Try traditional Polish dishes like pierogi dumplings filled with various ingredients and Sernik, a Polish cheesecake.
In addition, get the Gdańsk Tourist Organisation Tourist Cards Premium with transport for 72 hours.
I can’t say we covered it all, but we certainly got our money’s worth for the Tourist Card, which is free for all visits. A destination like Gdansk, with all it has to offer, deserves whatever you can allow on your trip. We took eight days, having initially set aside five days. It was all worth it. Enjoy, and remember Gdansk.
“In essence, history offers a valuable lens through which to view human experience, providing insights into our shared past and helping us navigate the complexities of the present and future.”
