Langham Hospitality Group has reached into its finest drawer of hospitality talent and pulled out a seasoned gem named Nick Downing to steer the ship at its upcoming Thai masterpiece, The Langham, Custom House, Bangkok.
With three decades of globe-trotting, white-glove hospitality experience under his well-tailored belt, Downing has been named General Manager of what’s tipped to become one of Southeast Asia’s most elegant riverside retreats. And from the looks of it, Langham isn’t playing small with this Bangkok beauty—opening in late 2026 with more silk and swagger than a Jim Thompson scarf.
Downing’s appointment is more than a staffing update—it’s a statement of luxury intent. The Group, famously mixes British charm with Asian precision, is revving up for the hotel’s debut with a carefully orchestrated series of executive hires. But make no mistake—Downing’s name is inked in bold at the top of that guest list.
From Samui to Siam—and Now to the Chao Phraya
Most recently, the General Manager at The Siam in Bangkok—a property so boutique it practically wears bespoke pyjamas—Downing led the resort to worldwide acclaim. Under his stewardship, The Siam clinched a spot on the World’s 50 Best Hotels list and landed a Michelin three-key distinction, a feather in any general manager’s cap.
Before Bangkok’s khlongs beckoned, Downing’s journey took him through the Asia-Pacific’s lush jungles and breezy coastlines. From managing a dozen properties under Minor Hotel Group’s umbrella to repositioning the fashionable W Retreat Koh Samui, Downing has transformed good hotels into cultural landmarks. And who could forget his touch at Per Aquum Hotels & Resorts, where he championed development at Huvafen Fushi—a Maldivian haven with underwater spa rooms that had the travel elite gasping for air (in the best way).
He now reports to Sherona Shng, Regional Vice President—Operations, Asia at Langham Hospitality Group, who was quick to emphasise the significance of this move.
“This appointment is a clear statement of intent,” said Shng. “We are building The Langham, Custom House, Bangkok to be one of the most distinctive and desirable hotels in the region. Nick’s ability to elevate properties into cultural icons, with a focus on people, partnerships and place, makes him the ideal person to bring the extraordinary hotel to life.”
Restoring Grandeur on the River
Situated in Bangkok’s Bang Rak district—the spiritual soul of the city’s riverside heritage—The Langham Custom House, Bangkok, will unfold along the fabled Chao Phraya River. Here, tradition dances gracefully with modernity. And thanks to Rabbit Holdings, the project’s developer (a subsidiary of BTS Group), it’s a dance that will unfold on a historical stage.
At its heart lies the painstakingly restored Custom House building—a colonial-era architectural gem that once processed ships and cargo and is now preparing to host afternoon teas and five-star check-ins. The 78-key hotel will mix classic Thai riverfront charm with Langham’s global savoir-faire, offering seasoned globetrotters and luxe-loving locals a new playground of indulgence.
And it’s not just the rooms that’ll be pulling focus.
Michelin Magic & Marvels on a Plate
Foodies, prepare your forks. The Langham Custom House, Bangkok, is set to host a Bangkok outpost of the celebrated T’ang Court—the three-Michelin-starred Cantonese jewel from The Langham, Hong Kong. Also in the works: a destination bar designed for glamorous sundowners and what’s described as a “world-class pastry outlet.” In short, Langham is rolling out the fondant, not just metaphorically.
Expect mille-feuille that could start diplomatic incidents, tarts with structural integrity, and perhaps even a lamington homage (we can only dream).
